I've got a new book out! Cult Britannia is a 400-page beast covering hundreds of weird and wonderful world of British horror and science fiction movies from the quaint post-war 1950s through to the end of the post-modern digital 1990s.

Available in paperback and on Kindle here: amzn.eu/d/ghGmoNA
The front cover of a book called Cult Britannia. The title is in large white letters against a Union Jack flag background, where the central red stripes are made from strips of film. The subtitle reads Great British Genre Movies from the 1950s to the 1990s.

I think a lot of Slow Horses would also benefit from it. Trouble is, I think audiences have been too conditioned to see multi camera shots as cheap and cheesy, even if they can't articulate why.
danwhitehead.net
I often think about how it used to be taken for granted that Doctor Who looked like cheap British telly and Star Wars looked like a big movie, and we didn't really notice or care despite both being available at exactly the same time. That compartmentalization has gone for good, I fear.

Just tried it again without the VPN and it went straight to the landing page. Not sure if that's because I already passed the being human test and it created a cookie though?
danwhitehead.net
Might be because I'm on a VPN, I'm guessing?

Yeah. It took me to a "click the box to prove you're human" Cloudflare gate, then your welcome page.

Shout Factory just uploaded this wonderful 1983 PBS documentary about the making of The Dark Crystal. 58 minutes of practical puppetry bliss.

🧵Thread. I collect photos that people took of their TV screens (in the days before video) because they wanted to capture a historical moment, or at least something that meant something to them.

Great thread that digs into a lot of things that have been on my mind lately. Specifically, how TV has backed itself into a very expensive corner and trained audiences to expect blockbuster movie presentation in everything, regardless of budget.

The death of multi-camera TV: a thread. I know most of you will know the technical parts of this (and may have read it in the other place) but bear with me. 1/ 🧵

Double Fine's Happy Action Theater is an absolute delight. Kid-friendly ghost game Haunt (from PaRappa creator Masaya Matsuura) is really fun as well.

We were privileged to accompany Storm around at New York Comic Con today. Or, as she tells everyone, she's Mini-Storm.

I've noticed the opposing team's fans only cheer when the opponents score on us. To win those fans over, I recommend we score on ourselves repeatedly; that will surely make them so happy they'll start supporting us. And I'm sure all our fans will keep cheering for us—who else is there to cheer for?

You know what, this time I'm just going to ignore it. He's really not worth

Have you read the good news?
A very poor Photoshop edit of the "Everything I Don't Like Is Woke" spoof Ladybird book, except now the man has Peter Thiel's face, the book is called "Everything I don't like is The Antichrist" and he's pointing at a car engine saying "This engine is the Antichrist".

"I'm sure you are, sir. I'm sure you are. It's probably nothing. Anyway, I've taken up enough of your time. Would it be OK to talk to you again at some point? Just in case anything else turns up, you understand."

"Kindle? Those, er, electric book things? My wife loves them. Me, I'm not so sure. But, forgive me, here's what I don't understand - you say you woke yourself up by dropping it on your face. Why would you be holding it above your face in your sleep? You see my problem? That just seems strange to me"
