I argue that LLMs are the opposable thumb of computing:

fundamentally novel range of motion that, when combined with the error-correcting fingers of conventional computing, change what's possible altogether

LLMs: the opposable thumb of computing
Amidst all the hype, all the skepticism, all the rending of clothes, I am here to tell you: the LLM is to computing what the thumb is to our hand.

Zohran Mamdani caught lying that he understood Plato’s allegory of the cave, yet when asked to explain it, he seemed to instead explain Baudrillard’s theory of Simulacra and Simulation where reality has been replaced by symbols and signs, which seems similar to Plato’s theory but is not the same

see, they *can* overturn these tariffs, they just don't *want* to except where beef is involved
🚨 The Senate votes 52-48 to overturn President Trump's 50 percent tariffs on Brazil. 5 GOP Senators break ranks to vote against Trump: Collins ME, McConnell KY, Murkowski AK, Paul KY, and Tillis NC.

it’ll work and people will prefer it to nothing but it’s not the same as creating I Love Lucy, you know,
Wrapping your API endpoints 1:1 in MCP tools is like putting a TV camera in front of a radio play

It's going to continue to go down. Agonizingly slowly in social media time. Quickly in political time.
Donald Trump's approval rating in our tracker has fallen to -18, the lowest it has ever been (lower than any point in his first term) www.economist.com/interactive/...
The SNAP crisis seems like a floor falling out of loads of that infrastructure

how much of our various supply chains run on underpaid people who won’t be able to feed their families? We’ll find out shortly
it’s the least important fact by far

But even American consumerism has fallen apart. “Express shipping” is just a tax on the gullible at this point

businesses can’t keep promises because of various breakdowns we can’t see
@ellie.wtf btw Atuin has become one of those things that I started using and can't possibly imagine living without

insta-install on new machines. thank you for making this
I do think with any new technology, a just transition is important and appropriate

so maybe we can do something for everyone who built an identity on being able to write regex from memory, this is a tough moment there
Reddit is the only place where you can find a negative number next to a toilet-brained reply and say

“I’m gonna flush you too”

beautiful in its way

"This fucking sucks" and "all is lost" are two different sentences.

Don't say the second when you mean the first.

You genuinely can’t win a war if you tolerate too much doomer behavior. Public doomerism is shockingly socially corrosive.
I'm really starting to see why countries that could, came down HARD on defeatism in WW2.

it sucks that alongside civil libertarians, leftist futurism also went extinct in the Trump era, and now all popular futurism is explicitly fascist

We don’t know how to actually be in coalition together and fight for the rights that protect all of us to create a country we want. Our rights are sorely in need of a refresh and a fight. But we don’t take that fight as seriously as we could. We taking fighting each other much more seriously.

But all four of these groups can be seduced to use the tools of the right to get ahead of another member of the coalition. Often can see another part of the coalition as a bigger threat than the right - a fundamentally segregationist party.

I have a pet theory that the four parts of a pro-democracy coalition are class-based socialist, race/class/gender based socialists, Industrialists/Capitalists, and Identitarians. Those four groups are fighting the right (white nationalists/christian nationalists/plutocrats).
the democratic party’s basic problem is it has almost no control over how its message reaches the ears of voters, especially outside of presidential election years. but rather than devote serious time, attention and cash to that problem its consultants and pundits want to fight factional battles

the ubiquitous technology that we all love and are dependent upon (the internet) also causes harm on a daily basis

you are not clean, your favorite technology is not pure, your heuristic for critiquing technology cannot hinge upon whether or not it causes harms

why are y’all using the internet and search engines? these are evil systems that consume enormous amounts of energy, spread CSAM, aid genocides, enable abuse/harassment, are filled with lies/misinformation/slop, and are used by fascists!

you should go to your local library and use the card catalog!
