Thieves of the Tome is officially digitally released! v1.0 looks and plays awesome and I'm so excited to get it out in the world.

The book is 70 pages of dripping acidpunk goodness featuring mechanics to run and play games using real books!

A page from a book. This chapter title has a large illustration of 3 brightly colored wizards. One is red and holding his hand up and casting some sort of spell, dressed in the robes of a priest and face blurring as it shakes in many directions. One is blue and dressed in a suit, radiating an air of posh. One is purple, partially replaced with electromechanical parts, and poring over a tome. A page from thieves of the tome. It has an illustration of NayZar, a phony prophet, as well as a stat block for them. NayZar looks like a bird wearing dirty blue robes. They wield an ocular staff and a tome with pages falling out. A page from thieves of the tome titled casting spells. It lists the steps of spell casting as 1. Speak the name 2. Hear the choice 3. Make a choice 4. Hear the effect 5. The consequences 6. Spell consumed. It also shows a colorful illustration of a bug man desperately trying to cast spells. A page from Thieves of the Tome titled Doom and Destiny. It shows a large illustration of a wizard with a scraggly beard and green goo flowing out of his head. His name is slime and he is a doomed thief.

Ahhh proofs are here!!!! (feat. pompompurin slippers)

#ttrpg #roleplaying #tabletop #books #sanrio
4 proofs of Thieves of the Tome on a wooden table. The book has several wizards in strange scenarios on the cover. One has sprouted wings, another's arm has turned into a massive finger, another's face stretches and distorts. Pompompurin slippers can be seen below the table.

Not that I often take stock in what people on Goodreads say but I gotta say What Feasts at Night may be even better than What Moves the Dead. T. Kingfisher can weave a dark gothic story just as strongly as Poe. Reading this while on a Vermont road trip is hitting. The scene involving the cover art..

I always write one sentence of an idea in my notes app so I have a bunch there, then I like to write my first drafts away from the internet so I use paper, and then it eventually ends up in drive. Tends to be a winnowing process for what actually ends up in Google docs.

Another batch of pages to share! A word on the marginalia: a large number of the illustrations in this RPG have stats.

Monsters in TotT are like mad libs. <bracketed> words get filled in with whatever book you're running the game from.
A page from Thieves of the Tome. Has an example of gameplay on some scraps of paper, and has an illustration of Shrei, a Space Gal with a colorful space suit, exposed brain, and engulfed in blue flames. A page from Thieves of the Tome titled "What's the gamemaster doing?" A large illustration of a cyclops takes up the page. He has a massive overflowing bag filled with Tomes and swords. He carries a crying cyclops baby. A page from thieves of the tome. There is a large illustration titled Wraithen. It shows a bright green bird, with writhing tail feathers possessed by the spirits of the dead.

Definitely Fiasco! It showed me that you barely even need dice to have a good time at the table. Some of the most interesting stories we've told were pure improv.

For tons of folks, there was that -one- game that blew the doors open and showed what #TTRPGs could be. The one that started the #IndieGame rabbit hole.

What was YOUR "gateway" indie #TTRPG? The first one that made you realize a whole other world was out there?

More pages to share! I'm just so happy with how this turned out.

A page from Thieves of the Tome titled Inventory and showing instructions to make the Thieves inventory from items in a book. It also has an illustration of Beezl, a djinn of purple cloudy gas. A page from thieves of the tome with a massive illustration of pyre, a fire person with a twisting cheery smile and long cartoony eyes. He has powers like eating parts of spells and turning them into raw power. A page titled reacting detailing the rules for reactions in thieves of the tome. It has an illustration of a blue winged and snooted creature with a spiny tail. Snot dribbles from its snoot.

I broke an SD card in half full of code that controlled an entire smart-mirror which was my final project for a class and had to remake the whole thing in a single night with no sleep. If I used GenAI I'd probably still be cleaning up the bugs today.

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.

Ordering proofs for my first physically published game while the US is embroiled in fascism is an emotional whirlwind.

Thieves started out pretty anti fascist, but the more this year happens, the more I have sharpened that message. Some of the modules we've written for this guy - cathartic.

Finally finished Absolution by @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social. Honing in on the most disturbing scenes of Authority and Acceptance was brilliant. I don't know if this was intended, but Area X is starting to remind me of the horror of LLMs; it's a place that vomits up copies with an inherent wrongness.

Started a Stone carving class today! Here's the before image, excited to see where it ends up.
An uncarved chunk of alabaster sits on pillows atop a pedestal. Hammers, chisels, and other tools are on the pedestal as well.

If you have a blog or a podcast or work for an award wining games journalism site (Cough @rascal.news ) or anything in between I would love to run a game for you. Reach out to Natalie and we will make it happen.

Last Kiss is an experience. Be a teen. Make bad choices. Hurt. Die.

We are in the late stage playtesting of @brianliberge.bsky.social's Last Kiss where we would LOVE to get some people who talk about games to play it.

Last Kiss is a game about Youth at the End of the World inspired by Revolutionary Girl Utena and I Saw The TV Glow.

The end is inevitable.

nobody wants video essays anymore. all the money’s in illuminated manuscripts these days. you can write any manuscript at all – a terrible one! it doesn’t matter! some startup will still jump in your emails begging to partner with you and get it illuminated

I also got a pinpanar9 "good" recently. Feels great!

However with a little time from this design I agree with you it's quite punishing. I like the idea of face cards as checkpoints, and making them correspond to some event in the story.

That way instead of doing a full time loop every time, you loop back to the most recent "face card checkpoint" 2/2
