"Go to where they live and ask them about their concerns" seems like such a basic idea, it's kind of weird so many people are acting like it's some brilliant strategy. It's great that he's doing it, but very confusing that it's not just a basic part of everyone's strategy!

Also, there is no guarantee that the person doing the purchasing will spend the money on that specific thing!

If you don't know what to get and you just generally want to help, money is great. But if there's something particular you want to make sure people get, donate the items!

I don’t talk about it much because the situation doesn’t really change but it’s still insane to me what an enormous amount of really talented game developers are out of work. just whole studios worth of incredible people, often people who worked on beloved games, unemployed.

One group that has mastered this somewhat are megachurch pastors who get caught doing something, and then tearfully confess to their congregation. They generally skip the "actually stop doing it" part, but it definitely works to diffuse the scandal and often leaves them more popular than before.

My primary criteria for supporting political candidates are: not a nazi, a sex offender, a spineless fascism-enabler, or actively supporting a genocide. Why the FUCK is it so hard to find people who pass these, it seems like a pretty goddamn low bar to me!

Being surrounded by thousands of my neighbors who are showing that they, too, are worried and angry is very powerful. It gives me more confidence that we can band together and defend our community. If I thought I was alone in caring, I would not try.

People also seriously underestimate the value of pure peer pressure. Seeing someone stand up and object, even in as small a way as waving a sign around, dramatically increases the chances that others will feel empowered to make a stand as well.
