We live in cretinous times, and the cretins would appear to be winning. Join the resistance and read a book.

A Jay perched on a wooden post with its tail feathers spread and wing raised dramatically, as if flagging down a ride. Its expression looks mid-squawk, giving the impression it’s calling for help or trying to make a quick getaway.

I’m off to Ireland later this week for my final solo poetry shows of the year.

Incredibly, there are still tickets left – especially for the Dublin show (I hope my performance there last year hasn’t put you off from coming again) – so please spread the word!

Tickets here: brianbilston.com/events/
A pic of me and my cat, alongside my Irish dates:
17 Oct: BELFAST: Mandela Hall
18 Oct: DUBLIN: Ambassador Theatre
19 Oct: LIMERICK: Lime Tree Theatre
20 Oct: DERRY: Millennium Forum

I wonder how long it'll take them to get bored of this current paroxysm – and what it'll take.

Boss, we’ve got a problem. Users don’t want this stuff! They keep wanting to turn it off, even when we keep turning it back on!

Boss: I have an idea

For god's sake let Facebook die already. Just take it out back and shoot it. Or a lethal injection and soothing music if you prefer. But it's overstayed its allotted years, time to pop off.

Interesting the inflection points on those graphs - first the rise in pro independence and/or devolution in 2010 across all identities - the start of austerity and the end of UK Labour government? Then a peak pro independence in 2019, when Boris Johnston is at his peak of "get Brexit done".

Analysis in @thetimes.com by @leaskyd.bsky.social & Anna Dowell of the sharp decline in British identity uncovered by the Scottish Social Attitudes survey.

With comment from Sir John Curtice on the polarising of Scottish politics and from myself on the decoupling of Scottish and British identities:
Why Scots are losing their British identity
With only a quarter of respondents to the Scottish Social Attitudes survey identifying with Britishness, Scotland faces a generational political split

Job occupations, from an 1881 census. Every one of these sounds like something a sorely provoked Captain Haddock would should at someone in times of heavy stress.

"A future president, even dumber than you, will allow Qatar, the country that harbored Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the architect of the plane attacks in NY, PA, and DC today, and whose royal family will help him escape capture by the US, to build a military base on US soil to train Qataris to fly jets."

If you squinted over the edge of the hill in that photo you would see our house. If you looked back over your shoulder you'd see our reservoir at the base of the hill... 🤮

We live underneath Dumyat, the hill in the article. Our reservoir is just the other side, and definitely not a full kilometre from the top of the hill. 🤮
