Hello newskies! I'm Dan, a game designer currently hailing from the Seattle area. I have lots of schipperkes, ADHD, and many (mostly crafty) hobbies in varying states of hyperfocus or neglect.

Favorite game: Journey
Color: Aqua
Album: Paul Simon - Graceland
Cocktail: Red Hook
Dinosaur: Amargasaurus
A selfie of me with glasses, a goatee, and curly hair down past my shoulders. I'm wearing a lanyard & attendee pass for Unreal Fest. Two small black schipperke dogs on leashes, ears up and panting in excitement

Run a hot enough game and it doubles as a small (very unreliable) drone

I had build-vs-PIE woes in a previous project:

Not to scare you, but building can expose unique bugs too. In particular, level initialization stuff (Event Play and the like) may fire in a different order and eg try to initialize stuff that hasn't been spawned yet. (Thread for my woes and eventual victory)

Anyone made a local, shared screen multiplayer game in Unreal?

Mine works fine in PIE but in the shipping exe, it's falling to register player 2's joystick input. (Both players on gamepads)

I take it all back, games were a mistake

That's also why there's no combat. No pressure to act. No quick time events. No fomo. It's just a CHILL GAME that lets you wander around old buildings, be nosy, and maybe see some spooky ghosts.

If you squint, this is another real-estate bubble

(Data Center Leases are the only ones terminating the money cycle, and that's leases, aka they're holding debt associated with real estate of suspect value)

If you need a slide showing "here's why these AI deals don't show demand for AI is that high," this Morgan Stanley Research slide is pretty good at showing how dang circular it all is.

They look like they're just passing the same dollar around lmao

A chart showing the circular deals between AMD, OpenAI, Oracle, Microsoft, Coreweave, NVIDIA, and "Data Center Lease."

...oof, yeah. As Ed Zitron has just started yelling, all of these promises are starting to collapse to "we'll build a (increasingly large number) GW data center by (increasingly near deadline)" and the timelines are pure fantasy.

We've also done the opposite of solving the long-dev-cycles problem on the software side.
coil.bsky.social
I guess, but the last five years have been anything but a normal console cycle. At this point in the last generation, the 1gb PS4 Slim had replaced the original (2x storage, same price point) and the Pro was also available.

This time, no refresh and prices are *up*. Not to mention the studios.
coil.bsky.social
True, but consider 2020 vs today. 2020 was surprisingly stacked for releases, investors were throwing money around like candy, and idk about other countries but the US handed out $thousands in pandemic relief.

Today we have shuttered studios, AI-obsessed investors, and expensive tariff wars.
coil.bsky.social
Absolutely absurd. Who's making games for them? Who's going to buy one? Both current consoles cost *more* than they did at launch just five years ago.

Correcting myself: class is stronger politics than morality.
coil.bsky.social
Yep. Class > politics.

Same, though moving from Boston to SoCal to Seattle certainly didn't help either.

"I think a state tree wouldn't be right here, but a decision tree would be perfect. I haven't actually worked much with decision trees, but I'd start by— Actually, let's have the AI do it. We can just open up Copilot, and"

And great, now *neither* of us is learning anything any more.
