Day 14 - Inside

I took this picture inside the Highgate Catacombs on a tour last year. Shortly after this the tour guide asked if I wanted to volunteer because I looked the part and I sadly had to say "sorry, I have to go back to Canada!"
The long hallway of the Highgate Catacombs with round skylights periodically along the ceiling. On the left wall are niches for caskets.

Brasses taken from tombstones on the floor of St Michael’s church in my #OnePlaceStudy of Waters Upton in #Shropshire, and mounted on the South wall when the church was rebuilt in 1864. Transcriptions on my website: waters-upton.uk/memorial-ins...
Photo of a tablet on a wall, bearing five monumental brasses. An explanatory sign mounted at the foot of the tablet reads: "These brasses were taken from Tombstones which were on the floor of the aisle of the old Church 1864".

Day 13 - Skeleton

#31daysofgraves
An old weathered gravestone stands in a grassy churchyard surrounded by other headstones. The top of the stone is elaborately carved with a skull surrounded by leaves and vines, symbolizing mortality. The inscription below is partly in Latin and partly in English, its letters softened by time and moss. It reads in part: “In spem Beatae Resurrectionis Hic reconditum est quicquid Mortale fuit… Judith… Daughter of Matthew Nicholas…” and dates to October 6th, 1748. The lower portion mentions that Judith was aged 14 years. The stone’s age and ornate memento mori carving give it a haunting yet reverent beauty, evocative of 18th-century funerary art.

Latin translation:

“In the hope of a Blessed Resurrection,
Here is laid whatever was mortal
of Judith, daughter of Matthew Nicholas, Master of Arts,
of Shalford in the County of Surrey,
who returned her soul to God
on the 6th of October, 1748,
aged 14 years.”

The combination of Latin and English was common at that time for educated families, particularly clergy or scholars (the “A.M.” stands for Artium Magister, or Master of Arts).

Abbey Church of La Mota — Alcalá la Real (Jaén) 🇪🇸

Beneath Sta. María Mayor Church lies a —probably— Visigothic necropolis carved in stone, twelve crypts deep and walls plenty of Renaissance arcosolia echoing centuries of faith and silence.

Jaén never stops amazing me 💘

#31DaysOfGraves Day 15 Damaged

I don't suppose in 1848, when St John's Churchyard #Nelson, ( then #GreatMarsden ) opened anyone thought of land management and irrigation?
As a result, the exposed sloping northern side has lots of land movement, damaging graves as it goes.

Black and white photograph of an old cemetery with multiple ornate tombstones and crosses, featuring a large, tiered central monument with a decorative cross on top.

The foreground graves are surrounded by white marble edging and gravel. Immediately behind the graves, a wooden fence separates the cemetery from a bare, winter vineyard stretching across the mid-ground.

A line of eucalyptus and scrub trees stands in the distant background. The bottom left is signed "© Kev Peirce".

Day 14: Inside. #31DaysOfGraves

Something a bit different today. Here is a before and after of the 'inside' of our chapel, renovated in 2016.
On the left is the photo of the chapel before with bare stone walls and debris on the ground, including some old dirty furniture. To the right is the photo of the chapel after. The walls are an off white having been plastered, with a wooden skirting, the floor is carpet, and there are pictures hung on the wall. The old cross is also restored and put back on the wall. Here are just two monuments from the extraordinary assemblage of 14th-15th century graveslabs that are now housed within the reroofed former Prior's house within the ruins of the Augustinian priory on the island of Oronsay.

These were most likely MacDuffie chiefs
