Hello followers! Are you in the right place? I post about cemeteries, folklore, Newfoundland, crafting, D&D, and other assorted (spooky) foolishness. I’m pro science, pro 2SLGBTQ+, pro climate change is real and anti racism, transphobia, homophobia, and simping for billionaires.

Day 14 - Inside

I took this picture inside the Highgate Catacombs on a tour last year. Shortly after this the tour guide asked if I wanted to volunteer because I looked the part and I sadly had to say "sorry, I have to go back to Canada!"
The long hallway of the Highgate Catacombs with round skylights periodically along the ceiling. On the left wall are niches for caskets.

Took a stroll in my favorite cemetery today and was singing the song that was stuck in my head out loud. In retrospect, maybe this wasn't the song to be singing while wandering the cemetery.

Updated to this. Just went to vote and they were like "yeah, you're on the list." So no idea why the website was telling me I wasn't registered!

I've been living in and paying taxes from my address for 11 years. So no idea why I wouldn't be on the list!
ohfolkthat.bsky.social
I just assumed I hadn't gotten a voter registration card because of the postal strike but when I went online to confirm where I was supposed to vote, it said I wasn't registered.
ohfolkthat.bsky.social
Despite voting in the last two provincial elections from the same address, I am somehow not on the voter list for this election and will have to register again tomorrow. Does anyone know why this happens?

Day 13 - Skeleton

Two lovely little skeletons on the grave of Cirsten Biset in Greyfriars Burial Ground, Perth, Scotland. The other side has this fantastic ship even though it was her 'spowse' Robert Browhowse who was the 'sailer.' She 'dyed' the '22th' of May 1747.
A beautifully carved gravestone in Greyfriars Burial Ground Perth, Scotland. The top has a winged cherub head. Two scrolls are on the sides with two skeletons below them. The scroll on the right side has the letters "BA IS IO EL GR MA" vertically down the scroll as if the scroll is not fully unrolled. The scroll on the left also has vertical letters but they all are the letter B. The very bottom of the stone has a banner but it has been damaged and if there were any words on it, they can no longer be read. Below this are damaged crossbones, skull, and sideways hourglass. The middle has the space for the inscription which reads:

Here lyes Cirsten
Biset spowse to
Robert Browhowse
Sailer who dyed
22th of May 1747 aged
49 years
Happy is the soul that lives on hie
Whil dust lyes resting here
Whose bless is all above the skie
Where nothing breeds us fear
She wants no power nor earthly thron
To raise hir figure here
Content and pleased to be unknown
Til Christ his lyfe appear A wonderfully ornate gravestone for Cirsten Biset in Greyfriars Burial Ground, Perth, Scotland. The top has an ornate letter B inside a wreath flanked by two winged cherub heads. Below this two torches on columns flank either side. In the middle is a carving of a tall ship above a carving of two people holding a plaque that has a wreath and an anchor on it. They are surrounded by carvings of vibes. The people appear to be standing on a banner that has the letters DFO in the centre.

Oh my undergrad ancient Greek is coming in handy! It's kind of like kh-eye-ray. The ancient Greek would look like χαίρε instead of xaipe where the χ is a kh sound and the ρ is an r sound.

Day 12 - Notable Woman

Nanette Stocker (first name spelled wrong on the stone) was a Little Person who became a music hall legend known for playing the piano forte. She performed annually at Birmingham's Onion Fair and is buried in the city at St Philip's Cathedral churchyard.
A small gravestone in the churchyard of St Philip's Cathedral In Birmingham, UK. The inscription is mostly obscured by lichen but with some effort it can be read:

In Memory of
Nanetta Stocker
Who departed this Life
May 4th, 1819
Aged 39 Years.
The smallest Woman ever in
This Kingdom possessed
With every accomplishment
Only 33 inches high.
Native of Austria.

Yeah we had a carving industry by then but I would not be surprised if the UK/Ireland wasn't sending over style guides because of our close ties!
ohfolkthat.bsky.social
I wouldn't be shocked only because Newfoundland was a British colony and even when we were granted the right to self rule our economy and culture was always bound up with the UK (and Ireland).

I feel a personal connection to Henry Candey because the Marconi Station where he died later became Admiralty House Communications Museum where I worked for a bit. I like to visit his grave(s) to let him know we still remember him.

Day 11 - Military

Henry Candey, warrant officer with the Royal Naval Reserve, was tragically killed at the Marconi Station in 1917. He has two gravestones in the same cemetery. One is his actual grave, the other is located a short distance away with other military gravestones!
The real grave of Henry Candey located at the Forest Road Anglican Cemetery. It is a simple cross with the following inscription below:

Of
Your love
Pray for the soul of
Henry Wm. Candey,
Who was accidentally
Killed at the
St John's wireless
Telegraph station
Sep 14th, 1917
Aged 21 years.
Jesu Mercy A second gravestone in the same cemetery for Henry Candey. It is located with a collection of other military graves and is a Commonwealth Grave Commission gravestone. It is a simple design which features the anchor design they use for any naval gravestone. Below that is the inscription which reads:

Henry W. Candey
Warrant telegraphist
Royal Naval Reserve
14th September 1917 age 23

Below the inscription is a cross. A screenshot of a newspaper article from the Evening Telegram in St John's, Newfoundland. The article shown reads as follows:

Warrant Officer Henry Candley
Killed at Mount Pearl this morning.

Warrant officer Henry Candley, of the Royal Navy, attached to the Mount Pearl Marconi Station, met death by accident at an early hour this morning when he was struck by an electric discharge. Particulars of the sad happening are not yet available as an inquiry is being held and the exact cause of death will probably be made known to-morrow. Warrant Officer Candley was 26 years of age, unmarried, an only arrived from the Old Country a few months ago. This is the first fatal accident of its kind to occur in connection with the Marconi service in this country, and the sudden passing of so useful and well liked a comrade is deeply felt by the commanding officer and staff of the Marconi Station. To the relatives of the deceased in the Old Country general sympathy will be expressed.

Brigus and Cupids are so close to each other so that makes sense to me but to have another stone as far away as Australia is so cool!

I'm starting the first movie tonight!

Psycho (1960). Norman Bates is absolutely an iconic villain and I've learn that the movie changed how we watch movies in theatres by instituting showtimes! /4
ohfolkthat.bsky.social
We won't be watching together because she lives in another province (unfortunately). But we are starting this month while we work on our list for the other 11 months. I'll post the list when it's done if anyone was interested in maybe following along! /3
ohfolkthat.bsky.social
Our only rules so far are:

1) we have to watch two movies each month, one in the first half and one in the last half

2) the movies we pick have to be ones neither of us have seen or we haven't watched in a long time /2

My best friend and I saw this post on Instagram about horror movies and we've decided to set up a watch schedule that follows these themes (though we expanded the summer into different types of teen/kid horror) /1
Part 1 of a screenshot of a post by a user named drtrinitysantos. It reads:

It's simple really: October is for horror movies with highly stylized villains and iconic monsters because they make for good costumes. Early November is for gothic horror because of the fog and decay etc. Late November is for zombies (commentary on consumerist culture). December is for psychological horror and stuff where they're trapped in a room because that's when you have to go to holiday parties with your family. Part 2 of screenshot of a post by a user named drtrinitysantos. It reads:

January is for possession and body horror (the loss of control and transformation of a new year beginning plus toxic diet culture). February is Valentine's Day so you can do whatever as long as you're horny about it.

March is for religious/cult-thened horror because of lent and Easter. Obviously April is Giallo because the blood splatter represents spring rainfall. Needs no explanation Part 3 of a screenshot of a post by a user named drtrinitysantos. It reads:

May is for cannibalism and horror comedy (Taurus season)

All of summer is for urban legends and anything that features children with minimal adult supervision so kids can watch them and be scarred for life. September is slashes because it's back to school season and that shit always seems to happen to teenagers and college students

Oh how the gentle wind
Beckons through the leaves
As autumn colours fall
Dancing in a swirl
Of golden memories
The loveliest lies of all
Katie's right hand. Two of the nails are painted in shades of green, one in a shade of brown, and two nails have nail art. One is Enoch, a pumpkin-headed figure. The other is a rock with a face painted on it and the words Rock Fact around it. The art is from the tv show Over the Garden Wall. Katie's left hand. One of the nails is painted red, one gold, one navy blue, and two nails have nail art. One is a shadow figure with antlers and glowing white eyes called The Beast. The other is a silhouette of two boys among the trees, one wearing a pointed hat and the other wearing an upside teapot on his head. The art is from the tv show Over the Garden Wall.

Day 9 - Hand

Loving the details of the hand on this stone in Greenspond, NL.

I can't see the carvers' mark, but I would be shocked if this wasn't a Skinner stone. Their style is pretty distinct. Definitely my favourites of the local carvers of the time!
A marble headstone in a cemetery in Greenspond, Newfoundland and Labrador. At the top is an incredibly details hand holding a quill over an open book which has the word Home written on it. Vines and leaves wrap around the book. Below that it reads:

In
Loving memory
Of
Stuart G. Bragg
Accidentally drowned
May 30th, 1931
Aged 25 years.
Erected by his wife Minnie.

Lo where this silent marble weeps
A husband, son and brother sleeps
A heart within whose sacred cell
The peaceful virtues loved to dwell.

Just apart where no shadows fall
In perfect peace awaiting all
Safe in the land that knows not pain
He is longing to meet us all again
