Geni shook her head and leaned one hip against Lydia's desk. "Makes you think Saint Seraphina and Saint Joelle had the right idea, huh?"

"What, being a joellian?"

"Yeah. Sometimes I just feel like every woman I know is a hundred times better than even the best man I know."

"Saints, Doc, don't hold back!" Lydia teased, blinking and looking askance. She threw her bag over her shoulder and jangled the keys as she headed for the door. "And what about you, Doc? Anything exciting happening tonight?"

"Ha!" was all Geni said, and laughing, the two of them left the practice.

“And I trust you.” Vola squeezed her close, the muscles contracting around Nat like a warm protective cage. She’d always known how much taller and broader Vola was, but being held close like this made an odd feeling skate down the length of her spine. Was this how her friend saw her? Delicate and small like a baby bird? Because that was how she felt right now, wrapped in the safety of Vola’s arms.

Snap. Out of it. Dear gods, what was up with her? She hadn’t had sex since that hookup with Ceres, and had been too stressed between work and the apartment situation to even masturbate in a couple weeks. Somehow, Vola being there at the same time as her seemed to strip away all the anxiety and fear, letting the other emotions she’d been repressing shine through. Yes, of course. That made sense. That had to be it.

Meet Wisteria, the second best mechanic on Izu station

The other wore a patchwork frame with bulky, jagged lower legs similar to the void mechs who helped dock my ship. Her primary arms and thighs appeared to be smaller versions of the armored security bots, but clearly fused into a frame that can host a human mind. Two additional delicate limbs on each of her sides extended whole suites of tools, lights, and sensors. Cables in different hues of purple fell from her skull in a loose braid down her back all the way to her hips.

She turned her head and I felt my Shen swell with emotion. Hers was the first fully articulated face I’d seen since I arrived. The first I’d seen like mine other than Lily’s in more than six hundred years.

She grabs my right arm and lifts it triumphantly in the air.
"Did you hear that everyone?! Chloé LaFleur is officially a show girlie!" The rest of the cast starts laughing and applauding and my cheeks are as flushed as they've ever been.
"I hate you," I say to Freja, trying my best to stifle my own laugh.
"Oh, you know you love me," she says. And, fuck, my heart starts racing again and the bees in my stomach go into overdrive, and I can feel my fear response kicking in. At the start of the season, my biggest fear was joining this show. Now, though, I’m more afraid she might be right.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 154:
Feed your writing daily. Feed it with fiction, non-fiction, news, games, theatre, films, art. Feed it with conversation. Feed it with experience. Feed it with curiosity. Don't expect to get anything out unless you also keep putting in.

Astraia had almost felt like a sister. Until she hadn't.

Until she really, truly hadn't.

Geni had nothing else to take the thoughts away but to dig a fingernail into the back of her wrist and hurry away, letting the cool air whip her hair around with abandon until she was well away from all that, the leaves, the school, the memories. Her reflection in a street-level window showed her a glimpse of the extent of the damage. Of course her hair would be a mess going to dinner. Nothing could ever be perfect. Who cared anyway? She was thirty-two, and already done. Just like the constant need for raking the leaves at this time of year, there was only so much salvaging even possible now. Maintenance mode. That was all that was left. None of that heady rush of youth and untested dreams of what love could be.

From a NaNo novel that might see the light one day. My MC's business partner gets a bit elemental when she's upset.

I forced my attention back to the brawl around me each time it wandered. Violent shivers began to subside even before I realized they were mine and not those of the world around me. I should have called for help but speech seemed too arduous with a floor so cold and inviting.

My partner passed, a snarl in slow motion. Her eyes were dark pits. Smoke trailed behind her. Crimson dripped from fingers that looked more like claws. Surely she would mop up the rest.

Then I remembered Anna hiding under the desk in the corner and tried to turn my head.

Pat blinked, as if doing so would clear her ears. “What? Phaedra? Why are you here?”

Phaedra braced herself against the door frame. Her black wolf shag hung in her eyes, but she didn’t appear to notice. “I know you can. I just… I need to forget. Please?”

“Have you been drinking?” Pat looked around. Phaedra’s Indian Scout was parked in the circular driveway. “You drove your motorcycle here? Does Andi know where you are?”

At the mention of Andi, Phaedra fell against the wall and slid into a blubbering heap.

“Oh this is bad. Come on.” Pat hoisted her up and led her to the sofa.

From a still untitled 🤦‍♀️ Aetherpunk novella. This is the MC on only her first night of watch as The Rose Compass and her crew begins the hunt for an Imperial Admiral's ship in dangerous skies.

I rolled my eyes but couldn’t keep a smile from my lips as I lifted the warm mug to my face. I breathed deep. The earthy aroma threatened to warm me from the inside out all by itself. "Thanks, Em. Who would’ve…"

I caught movement off to port. Emmy must have sensed it too, lowering her mug and glancing out into the dark. Then we both stumbled backward as a gaunt and pale humanoid appeared. They crouched on the railing and scented us through a curtain of matted hair. Their mouth opened to fangs that seemed to grow as I watched.

I turned to Emmy to see the color drain even from her cold, cherry-red nose. Her eyes widened. Her abandoned mug shattered on the deck when she reached for the hilt of her blade. Steaming tea ran dark across enchanted wood as she raised the alarm. "Nighteaters!"
