That is the big problem with originalists. They don’t do deep dives into the original intent of the authors of the 13th-17th amendments.

If the Supreme Court just calls balls and strikes yesterday’s oral arguments about the Voting Rights Act was as if Louisiana threw a wild pitch into the stands and the conservative Justices called it a strike and the liberal Justices said you’ve got to be kidding

Neither Vought nor anyone else in the administration wants any government agency to protect consumers. No law gives the acting director of an agency the authority to shut it down. I will bet that Russ Vought has been on the scamming side of financial scams multiple times.

UPDATE: Following the firing of the director of the student newspaper, Indiana University has now cut the print edition of the newspaper entirely.

Indiana University cuts IDS print entirely, hours after firing student media director
By IDS staff
Oct 15, 2025 1:23 pm · Updated Oct 15, 2025 1:23 pm

IU previously directed the Indiana Daily Student to stop printing news coverage in our newspaper. Upon pushback, the university fully cut print, including our special editions. The IDS was not involved in the decision.

Media School Dean David Tolchinsky sent the order to IDS leadership in an email responding to its appeal that the school not censor the newspaper. And the dean attributed the decision to “the campus.” He has not yet responded to a message for clarification.

Politico received an initial tip that a Taylor staffer had a swastika neatly pinned to his cubicle during a zoom call. When confronted, the congressman’s press office pretty implausibly sought to present the situation as a police matter, and Politico went along with that in its headline and lede.

Democrats should make a criminal referral to DOJ and start describing what Trump is doing as criminal.

Trump's mechanism to pay the troops during the shutdown is by far the most illegal budgetary action he's taken as POTUS, potentially setting the stage to break everything.

It's also needless because Congress would easily pass a troop pay bill if Johnson were willing to gavel in.

Long thread.

There are 23 metro systems in the world with more than 1 billion annual riders. China has 12 of those, including the top 4, and 8/12 have opened since 2004. No other country has more than one such system.

More than 250 million annual riders? China has 28/65 systems, and 23 have opened since 2003.

A tax on the Forbes 400 of all but $100 million each would raise $4.46 trillion, (Forbes estimate of F400 net worth $4.5 tril. - 400*$100 mil.) This is 12.8% of total Federal debt, 16.2% of debt held by the public.

Tell this to billionaires who demagogue the debt

I mean, the guys who can pay the military during a shutdown should be taxed enough to pay the military 24/7/365.

And then, enough to pay for health care for the whole country.

At the request of the U.S. Department of Justice, a Facebook group used by nearly 80,000 people to report sightings of federal immigration agents in the Chicago area has been taken down by the social media giant Meta, Facebook’s parent company.

The group, "ICE Sighting-Chicagoland," has been increasingly used in the last five weeks of President Donald Trump’s intense deportation campaign to warn neighbors that federal agents are nearby.

My dad once said he was racist but his kids wouldn't be. I don't remember him doing or saying anything racist, but his mother was extremely bigoted, so he may have meant he was raised to be racist.

Kids learn racism not just at home but also from the culture, like they learn language.

Lawyers learn to construct the most plausible arguments that favor their client. One would hope that as judges, they would reason logically, or see their client as the public at large. The GOP Scotus sees their sugar daddies as their client, & do not feel a need to give reasons behind their rulings

We have armed secret police kidnapping people off the street based on the color of their skin.

When we win: we will haul them before a Senate committee. The masks will come off. There will be consequences.
