Deep dive into the surge in US pedestrian deaths:

"It’s not that more pedestrians are getting hit by vehicles; it’s that the ones that are getting hit are more likely to die."

"[That] seems like fairly strong evidence for the theory that the rise in large SUVs is behind the uptick in ped deaths."
Why Are So Many Pedestrians Killed by Cars in the US?
It’s unfortunately not uncommon for pedestrians to be killed by cars in the US.

I checked the numbers and Kiké Hernandez turns into Mookie Betts in the postseason (comparing the former’s career playoff OPS to the latter‘s regular season career OPS).
Barry (9) and Bobby Bonds (0) combined for 9. I think this technically counts. can you confirm? @ericstephen.bsky.social

California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill to phase out toxic “forever chemicals” known as PFAS in cookware. This decision fails to protect Californians from the serious health effects linked to PFAS, including birth defects and increased risks of certain cancers.

If you want to really feel the housing crisis, browse the Census microdata for LA households with lots of people in them. About 16,000 houses in LA County have three bedrooms and 8+ people.
The frequencies on the Big Blue Bus 7 are so good it’s like having a $1.25 uber from my house to downtown Santa Monica.

I gotta be honest I have been historically skeptical of the idea of digital twins but recently I learned that Japan's MLIT built an entire 3D model of every building and road in the country with semantic and underlying use information, so uh... maybe less skeptical

I personally like it when the falling water of Hetch Hetchy pushes my packed bus straight up a big f’ing SF hill.
Trolleybuses pull power directly into efficient, hill-climbing engines without need for massive, pavement-crushing batteries. Next gen trolleys with in-motion charging offer significant off-wire travel, allowing incremental wire extension. SF and Seattle partnering:

Thank you @governor.ca.gov for vetoing SB 34, which would have created more barriers to cleaning up our freight system, at the exact moment that the federal government is undermining our ability to regulate pollution. www.gov.ca.gov/wp-content/u...

You're living through one of the biggest technological transformations in world history and it has nothing to do with AI
Grid scale batteries are changing our electricity system. Excellent new visual story on batteries in FT today shows just how far this technology has evolved.

Fasten your seatbelts, this is just the beginning.

I remember buying Return to Cookie Mountain from Amoeba in the Haight when it came out. I felt very grown up.
The D Line / Purple extension is going to totally transform Los Angeles.

The alternative to old bungalows being torn down and replaced by a number of condos or townhomes that costs roughly the same is the old bungalow being torn down and replaced by a large house that costs 3x as much.
This is literally what happened before rezoning

Farkas gave an example from the Glamorgan neighbourhood, where he said $600,000 bungalows
are being torn down and replaced with $750,000 luxury condos.
