It is ridiculously sweet, they spend hours training the owls to fly, but the biggest laugh is when they walk.. Rafiki an African Spotted Eagle Owl is incredibly fast… running around, where as Kibo tends to plod along…. But Kibo does keep stopping to look at grass or leaves 😁..

Yeah, we rope off nests here, some trapping is done and we plead for people to leash dogs. They actually do surprisingly well given it is a public beach (albeit a quiet one) but they do not have an easy life..... this was taken from a camera trap just around the corner.

Apparently there are two chicks on the beach! I did not spot them but they are not always easy to see and I am a bit out of practice. I look forward to hopefully catching them camera in the next little while.

Nice to see these guys again after 5 months away. This mound is a favourite look-out spot. There are four breeding pairs of Northern dottrerels (tuturiwhatu) on the beach at the moment - no successful nests yet though. This time of year the winds and high tides make it tough for the little guys.

A visit from a very special beastie! I hope s/he hangs around.... and does not get annoyed by boats. Fortunately it's not a hot tourist time at the moment and, in general, I think the locals are very respectful of marine wildlife.

Solstice was sometimes affectionately called "The Egg Cannon" & was the matriarch of the 'Celestial dynasty'-many descendants carry celestial-themed names. Cloacitis continues to be a curse in this population. Research is ongoing.😔

It was a long haul but I did stop at the fur seal colony outside Kaikoura (it's compulsory!!). It was a slow day in the colony - lots of resting, not much action. And a supervising gull.

Several fur seals have hauled out and are napping on rocks. There are larger rocks behind them and a solitary gull on those rocks appears to be watching over them.
