What an odd relief to learn this term! I thought I was doing something wrong but maybe my pain is *gasp* beyond my control.

Happy Monday and a gentle reminder to those dealing with chronic illness to watch out for the October Slide.

This time of year can cause flare ups, increased symptoms and unexpected hits to your baseline.

It’s best to go slow. Be gentle. And know that you’re not alone.

Props to Benjamin for sharing the details of his contract. Unfortunately no props to MRM because there's a lot of extremely outre stuff in here that I'd refuse to sign. Let's run it down. (Context: If you're negotiating a contract with Strange Horizons, I'm the person you're negotiating with.)

New neuroscience short story forthcoming in @analogsf.bsky.social! Which also means a story of - ultimately successful - negotiations with their new publisher.

Includes full final text of my contract for all to use while they finish rewriting their boilerplate.

Sigh it’s time for our weekly remonstrance:

FATNESS ISN’T IMMORAL YOU FUCKING FUCKS

ICE, Trump, et al are not evil because they’re fat. They’re evil because they hurt people.

All you’re doing is reinforcing hurtful stereotypes and I do unfollow and block when I see it.

NEW POEM #274: "Bested by Charismatic Megafauna" by Christa Fairbrother (@christafairbrother.bsky.social)

"I told him I've been
to Australia, pet
the koalas, and
they're really not
soft, but scratchy. They
smelled like greasy, grey

The moment I saw the skeletal Highland cow at the store, I knew I must claim the bizarre bovine for my lawn. Now battle ensues.
On a leaf scattered lawn, ghosts on stakes watch the battle unfolding between a giant inflatable green-and-black spider and an inflatable skeletal highland cow.

For over a decade, I have taken my (87-year-old) mom to the Portland Farmer’s market most Saturday mornings so she can do her weekly shopping. Today, I thought why not share a few snaps with Bluesky?
Vendor with pumpkins, tomatoes, arugula, lettuce. No fires. South Park Blocks with vendors and people lined up waiting to purchase their veggies. No fires. Beautiful multicolored peppers in foreground. Radishes, zucchini, and radicchio in background. Not on fire. Colorful conchas. Not ablaze.

The garden is neglected.

Last night I completed this puzzle based on Kim Smith’s rendition of the Norman Lykes house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. I picked it up in the gift shop when we visited Taliesin a couple of weeks ago. I love that it looks like an abandoned spaceship.
A jigsaw puzzle image of an adobe home, set against soft-peaked mountains in the Phoenix desert, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The sky is a cloudless blue, the mountains a darker blue, and the earth surrounding the home is brown and black with cactus and small bushes. The house looks both futuristic and timeless.
