It's probably over in social psych, but more or less there's a need for "group" and "risk" in young ~men for identity formation, with a requirement to place oneself in a risky state to show commitment. Jane Ward's Not Gay is good?

Were the Big Social Issues different the jokes would be too.

alex make this a blog post somewhere when ur done

There's uhhh a _lot_ in here about testosterone and in-group formation, so that is, delicately, not super surprising to me

the other side is that people can find one another for like, mutual dis/interests

but the in-group signaling really hasn't changed much because it is still "risky" to be awful

this answer is so dull and so bluesky i hate it but:

most of the research says it's the disgust centres of the brain being real close to the pleasure centres, combined with hierarchical and combative status achievement/in-group creation through risk-taking

Heartbroken that, per his social media accounts, Drew Struzan has left us. His poster and album art was quite simply shorthand for imagination for countless young people.
E.T. Adventure poster, 1990. I still have one of these hanging in my childhood bedroom. Star Wars Special edition triptych, 1997. I remember seeing all of these in the paper as each film was re-released and just felt a burst of energy those mornings. Hook poster, 1991 Back to the Future poster, 1985

1. it's fine to ignore any piece of literature authored by someone named Jonathan, you are missing nothing

2. Major literary prizes are a form of genre fiction for adults who need someone else to have their opinions for them

One of my complaints about Severance -- which I like quite a bit -- is how obvious it is that no one involved in it ever worked in a corporate office environment. Hollywood in particular is very bad at depicting the hopelessness of a dead-end job with no prospects

there's a years ago tweet that basically said that anyone writing TV or movies by definition managed to land their extremely-hard-to-get dream job and it colors how they think about work and jobs and wish fulfillment in the stuff they write, and i think about it a lot

The lead of Signal is one hundred percent correct here, which we know because people keep getting snaps of US officials using Signal instead of other platforms.

In particular, we must be wary of "new" proposals that allow scanning of "known content" while claiming to protect privacy by proscribing "indiscriminate" surveillance. We must also look out for those that mandate only scanning for “hashed images or videos.” 4/
