How crazy is it that so many people need to be persuaded to care about human rights. I mean, they’re *human rights* and you’re a human. What are you not getting here?

This is not really profound but I hope this does teach us how powerless they really are once we just decide not to cede the power to them. I'm not talking about individuals in vulnerable positions but I'm talking about our collective will.

Weaponised incompetence. Australian officials are getting very good at doing this too.

Politicians and media have been conveying that the situation for Israelis is joyous but for Palestinians it’s… complicated. And yes, sadly, their circumstances are very different. But the attempt to create a simple feel-good narrative for *one side only* is actually insane. It’s all the same story!

Haha. I can't remember any of mine currently but I get it. The Four Corners ident definitely has a bit of a Screen Gems vibe..... www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlmy...

There’s still that little matter of the crime of genocide to consider.

Yes, it’s striking the care they are taking about maintaining this distinction between the two different types of releases happening. Like they have to keep splitting the news stories into two segments almost, with a different tone for each.

we’re about to get a data centre in Launceston

NO discussion about the resources it’ll consume or how that will flow thru to the community in terms of cost

talk is all ‘jobs‘ but I understand that once built (contractors from the mainland?) it’ll need fewer than 50 to operate

‘…data centres are massive operations requiring huge amounts of land, water and power. But not for the purpose of supporting anything that’s alive. By 2035, it’s estimated that these centres could be using a quarter of Sydney’s water supply for cooling purposes.’

“These findings follow previous research which concluded that the more people learn about how AI works, the less they trust it. The opposite was also true — AI’s biggest fanboys tended to be those who understood the least about the tech.”
The More Scientists Work With AI, the Less They Trust It
A preliminary report shows that researchers' confidence in AI software dropped off a cliff over the last year.

I do indeed. Such a great film, not that that was your point.

Meanwhile, mainstream media is ignoring a new report noting 1 in 7 Australians, and 1 in 6 children, are living in #poverty.

They have more 'newsworthy' issues, like the uber wealthy responding to super changes making them slightly less wealthy.

The political & media class is fucked. #auspol

Exactly. Go follow a "chicken-heart" who is openly critical of a massive media organisation and the authoritarian regime that they are enbaling? Because obviously the brave stance is to... not do that.

Congrats, Marc and Brendan! 🎉 Hope you can have a nice break after it finishes and just enjoy the achievement.

"Outsider" meaning not quite part of Hollywood... or captured by its methods. Katharine Hepburn had that too but maybe not as much in terms of the actual performances. Keaton could seem (be?) so *real* on screen. I do wonder how she managed that, she must have had a lot of internal fortitude.
brionykidd.bsky.social
Ah Diane Keaton. Fabulous in her white turtleneck era. Before that, domestic stories that seemed conventional but were sharp as hell. Iconic as Annie Hall, hilarious in LOVE & DEATH, SLEEPER etc. Powerful in THE GODFATHER & REDS. So successful yet always seemed like an outsider. Was that the genius?
Still from ANNNIE HALL, showing Diane Keaton as Annie. It's a mid shot and she is wearing a white shirt, a waist coat and tie and with hair down. She is smiling to someone off screen with that pure Diane Keaton warmth.

If reports are to be believed, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya is to remain in Israeli prison (without charges or trial) even after the exchange of hostages.

Today is World Homeless Day, and after years reporting on this crisis, I'll just say: homelessness is neither inevitable nor intractable. It's the result of choices—political, economic, moral—that can be unmade.

And this: how we treat the unhoused is a bellwether for the violence we will tolerate.

Excllent, and thanks. 🥳

Maybe neo-liberalism is like that. You can't just dabble in it... and if you try to some kind of body snatching process takes over and that's it, you're done.
