I was accosted by an angry public commentator at a recent Santa Monica Council meeting and he told me that "[he] wouldn't feel safe on the train even if [he] had an Uzi"

I got celebrated in a meeting for being brave enough to take LA Metro from our team dinner in Little Tokyo to catch an Amtrak home because my coworkers "still don't trust it." It was one stop to Union Station at 7:15 on a Thursday. We have the Conservative Guy Afraid of Cities on our side, too.

“many prominent young republicans are actual Nazis” is a self-censoring fact at this point

normie swing voters will literally refuse to believe it and the media refuses to report it because it would call everything else they’ve done into question
beijingpalmer.bsky.social
while 'young republicans are literal nazis' is well known to folks here, the extent of it is surprisingly not that commonly known even in media and analyst circles, let alone normal people.

Q: Politico reported on a group chat of young Republicans. Does this just reflect some bad apples?

HOCHUL: Some bad apples? These are the future of the GOP. This is so vile it's hard to find the words to put into context ... there's gotta be consequences ... this bullshit has to stop.

If you want to really feel the housing crisis, browse the Census microdata for LA households with lots of people in them. About 16,000 houses in LA County have three bedrooms and 8+ people.

Grid scale batteries are changing our electricity system. Excellent new visual story on batteries in FT today shows just how far this technology has evolved.

Fasten your seatbelts, this is just the beginning.

The biggest mystery about LA to me is who shops for groceries at Erewhon? Normal people can’t afford to pay $20 for a single carrot, and I assume anyone rich enough to justify that just sends their staff to pick up fresh produce from the farmers market. So who is buying this shit?

social media is bad for all of our brains, but there are certain issues that tend to capture people who are susceptible to this way of thinking in a way that may not be intuitively obvious if you haven't seen it.

yeah - I was impressed by the token-prediction as being as powerful as it is, but there's more going on than that and I don't really follow it any more.

Promoting the editor-in-chief's personal side project. Zero named sources in a story that promotes the editor-in-chief's personal political position. Misspelling the subject's name. It took one day for CBS News to become a conservative blog.

I don't understand why U.S. reporters so regularly seem to let politicians get away with 'I haven't seen that' about stuff a) they obviously know and b) is directly relevant to their job. Did they sign some kind of agreement never to ask a follow-up question?

Bret Deveraux has a (largely correct) recurring point about how the only thing humans fear more than death is shame and this motivates a lot of pro-social behavior and the increasing shamelessness across human society is kind of a massive problem for that
