Ah, it's that time of year when the Dutch consume deep fried sweet delights. Our local oliebollen* van has returned. Lekker! 🎉

On New Year's Eve the queues go around the block.

"De leukste oliebollen van Rotterdam!"

[*Literally, "oil ball". It's better than it sounds 😊]

"We have a rising new Dem star who really engages with people, and is sure to win their next election."

DEM LEADERSHIP: That's fantastic.

"What are the next steps?"

DEM LEADERSHIP: Simple. Force them to step aside and throw their support behind this 80-year-old lifetime politician.

Trump just bombed six more people in the Caribbean, for a total of 27 civilians who have been killed so far by the US military. It’s illegal for the military to target civilians who do not pose an immediate threat. This is murder.

It’s true, but I think he would have gone whichever way he thought he could be successful. Following polls instead of leading. Which is the definition of centrism, really.

Man, people gotta stop saying “bad apples”. The whole point of this old saying is if you don’t remove the bad apples they spoil the rest of them. If the GOP had been removing their bad apples all along, maybe they’d be a sane party today.

There’s a lesson for Democrats there.

Q: Politico reported on a group chat of young Republicans. Does this just reflect some bad apples?

HOCHUL: Some bad apples? These are the future of the GOP. This is so vile it's hard to find the words to put into context ... there's gotta be consequences ... this bullshit has to stop.

It’s really too bad. He could have more beloved than FDR but the right wing had labeled him a radical and he was terrified of inhabiting that. He carried a lot of weight being the first black president and I think that led to him play it way too safe.

Still fully bitter about whichever Dem insiders muzzled Tim Walz. He was right, it was working, and it was coalescing as a theme that would work across disparate liberal groups. What a huge failure of understanding modern political cultures.

this is really the key insight. it's why the best attacks against them highlight that these violent, sadistic racists are not really able to coexist in society - they aren't just offensive, they're deeply off-putting: weirdos, creeps, etc. bsky.app/profile/junl...

Yes they used to barely suppress their Nazism but they've egged each other on so much that they've dropped the mask. And the fact they are feeling so comfortable to just say it in writing is what makes it so shocking.

I’m seeing two reactions to this story: “OMG” and “Well, duh”.

Which group you fall into depends entirely on whether or not you ever interacted with a member of the Young Republicans going back to at least the ‘80s and probably 20 years before that.

I was referring to whether he had the votes. As far as what he really wanted, I don't really care. But I agree he always kept too much to the middle and if he'd just gone for it, he would have been the greatest president in history.

I often compare higher education costs to new car costs. The availability of financing drives up costs and higher costs drives more financing. The two push each other forever upward.
