Maybe you see my #PlowSidewalksToo hashtag and think, "Yeah, sure, sounds great but it would require a massive tax increase and expansion of the public payroll and no one is going to willingly sign on for that. Real shame, though."

So: a thread. 🧵

Meanwhile, NY was *this close* to spending a billion dollars to temporarily save 6 minutes for drivers. Until the lanes filled up again. When have my 6 minutes ever mattered to NYSDOT?

Why don't we have high speed rail?

Why aren't sidewalks plowed just like streets are?

Why are bus stops & schedules always getting cut?

Why aren't there safe, convenient bike lanes connecting jobs & homes?

Because your time does not matter unless you're in a private vehicle.

A great example, thankfully canceled, of how the time of drivers is treated as a precious commodity that must be conserved at all cost.

Meanwhile, the time of everyone outside of cars continues to be freely expendable.

Great quote about how it can't be transportation if it isn't a car.
#WindshieldBias
...Speculatively, I wonder if we've reached a point where, after 100 years of car-first thinking and planning, every mode of transport is automatically judged by how closely it resembles the private car.

Take the bus? No, for it does not resemble my car. In my car I travel alone and I leave at the exact moment of my choosing. The bus does not do these things, and therefore it is not transport.

Ride a bike? No, for it does not resemble my car. My car has a roof. A bicycle does not have a roof, and therefore it is not transport.

Drive an electric car? No, for it do— Actually, okay, yes... but only if it looks and sounds exactly like my petrol car, down to having the same oversized body, the exact same abundance of empty seats, and even the same level of noise pollution that I have grown accustomed to...

Maybe I am kidding myself, but I don't see an heir apparent. 47 will pass sooner or later. JD has no cult following, no one making heroic memes about him. Same for 47's kids. Not sure the hero worship is that easily transferred.

If you still need to share a link to a tweet, but don't want to send people to Musk's cesspool - replace "x" with "xcancel" in the tweet link.

For example x.com/dril/status/...

becomes xcancel.com/dril/status/...

People will still see the tweet, but without going to Twitter.
