Secondly, the cycleway needs to extend up to Sandon Road, or at least the Harborne Walkway (Greenway). Stopping short is a missed opportunity to create a connected network. There’s a risk of low usage complaints because it doesn’t link to existing safe cycle routes.

If we were to offer improvments to the scheme:

Firstly, the bus lanes should run the full length, not just when there are conveniently 3 lanes. Buses are much more efficient than cars and should be given priority, not stuck in traffic at peak time.

There a new consulation for mixed mode development on Hagley Road 🙌

hagleyroad.commonplace.is/en-GB/propos...

This is great to see a good stretch of separated bike lane and some bus lanes. We encourage you to support this consulatation.

Spanish visitor to Harborne today asked me for directions. She then asked me how to cross the road, as she couldn't see any crossings. "You just have to walk out and hope"

Temporary, volunteer #SchoolStreets are like a smoke-free section in a restaurant: a useless half-measure for those who see a problem but don't have the will to solve it.

This, on the other hand, is an actual car-free school street, and we should demand nothing less for students across the UK.

Avant / Après la rue aux écoles Rue Duranti dans le 11ème arrondissement de Paris. On est passé d'un arbre en pot avant qu'on voit au fond à droite, à une vingtaine d'arbres en terre après.

Thank you to those who have been asking about our LTN scheme proposals. At the last Harborne Ward Forum, at least one councillor stated he would not be supporting the the scheme under the ENTF fund. We are disappointed, but we will continue to develop the scheme for the new 2026 councillors.

“Cycle routes can expand the catchment area of public transport interchanges from a radius of half a mile to 3 miles” - Laura Laker… Imagine a tram on Hagley road, with secure bike parking beside the walkway where the old railway station was. The car free catchment would be huge.

Selly Oak “relief road” links many important and busy destinations. The narrow and inadequate shared path is now littered with constructors Dismount and walk signs. No work going on. Who wants to or can push a loaded bike up that hill. What about riders with disabilities?
Picture shows cycle lane closed and cyclists dismount and walk signs on uphill section of shared use pavement.

This is a significant report from CIHT (Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation) on adopting a Safe System Approach. Pleasing to see it referencing the Welsh approach of setting 20mph default speeds and "excepting up".

My biggest pet peeve about public transit policy is when its only purpose is seen as commuting to work.

A good transit system is there to support all kinds of trips at all times of the day, not only office commutes. Groceries, football games, coffee shop trips, concerts, etc.

Thank you everyone who came to this. It was a robust evening of discussion. Onwards!

Drive-throughs in cities in 2024 are an anachronism.
