Side note: people assume “fancier graphics = more dev time”, but ray tracing saves devs a hell of a lot of time compared to older methods of lighting. We’re just currently in a weird transition stage where consoles can sort of handle ray-tracing but also can’t.

I also remember people claiming they couldn’t see “where graphics go from here” during the 360 years, lmao

I remember people were claiming it was too soon when rumours of the PS4 were floating, and that was at the end of the longest generation there’s been

Yeah, I think the various PS/Xbox attempts at mid-gen refreshes have been trying to shift to that model, but they haven’t worked out that way

I’ve said this before but every other tech company releases *every year* something much like last year and every 3-7 years people upgrade and it feels like an upgrade because skipping 5 gens *is* an upgrade. This is surely the way forward
batariangal.bsky.social
Don’t get me wrong, I’d be perfectly happy for this gen to be stretched out, I’m not itching for a PS6 (well, apart from the handheld version rumours). But I’m not, like, in denial of the passage of time since 2020.

I think the main argument for 2027 being too soon is inflation and tariffs meaning the PS5 is more expensive than it was at launch. The price does not reflect an aging product (and, to be fair, it is not aging as rapidly as the PS4 was ~2018), so I get why people raise their eyebrows.

Yeah, I’d probably even say it’s been a weaker gen than the PS4 for me, but there’s “weaker” and “the sky is falling in”

Increasingly a tone of 'next gen has no games' is getting on my nerves when its a lot of a certain generation of gamers having their taste calcify vs lack of actual good things to play

People do realise gens have gotten longer on average, right? The Xbox 360 came out four years after the original Xbox
batariangal.bsky.social
I think there’s probably a fair argument that 7 years is too early this time, but, basically every time we get to the point of these rumours, people act like the slowest tech cycle going is happening at a blistering pace

Though I do think you also get times when someone gets accused of doing the "so you hate waffles" thing when they were just correctly identifying the implications of what someone had said

To be fair, I will grant that actually arguing for some sort of left/liberal policy and being willing to defend it coherently is far more likely to achieve positive results than what most of the nominal “left” is doing

Somewhere in between "if you just motivate enough people by saying left wing things, you can win" and "repeatedly pissing off your entire base is a good and sensible thing to do and is how you win elections", there is a middle ground known as engaging with reality.

I like Polanski, but God I wish the left would stop with these comfort narratives. (Also, he's not the leader of the *UK* Green party because that doesn't exist)

watching the UKs green party elect an actual unafraid leftist into leadership and see party membership double in under a month is once again endless proof that if you stand up for leftist causes and treat the electorate like adults, you’ll win people over easily

Imagine if a left wing British party had the largest membership of any left wing party in Europe. Such a party would surely be an electoral success

It’s funny/depressing when people expect community resources for a new game to be as comprehensive as they are for games that have been out for a while
batariangal.bsky.social
I’m not sure if it’s revenue or sales, but it’s a heavily skewed figure that includes micro transactions, DLC, and mobile games. The industry is a bit opaque with sales data, but an Insomniac leak a few years back suggested the physical/digital split had basically plateaued around 50/50
batariangal.bsky.social
Case in point: the premium edition of Outer Worlds 2 can currently be pre-ordered on Amazon for £70 (and the standard for £55). On the PS store, the premium is £90 and the standard is £60

(A shame that, ‘cos it’s a Microsoft release, the disc will just be a glorified download code)
batariangal.bsky.social
Even without the Insomniac leak a few years back that showed digital growth had plateaued, this should be intuitive to anyone who’s actually compared launch prices on the PS store to physical launch prices.
batariangal.bsky.social
Dear God, the “less than 20% of game sales are physical” stat just refuses to die. That’s not the ratio at launch! Which is when most games will actually make money
