Bicycles. Punk rock didn't save the world, but it should have. I try to stay on topic, but you're going to get random posts about housing, gardening, preserving/canning, dogs, and baseball.

Look, all I want is for everyone to make 25% of the 50% of trips that are less than 3 miles by something other than car.

I know people don't like word problems, but just take your bike once in awhile.

Trump is functionally illiterate. He's never read anything more complicated than a McDonald's menu.

Ronald Reagan was wrong. The most terrifying words aren't, "I’m from the government and I’m here to help," they are, "I'm from Silicon Valley."

There is no scary thing than a tech CEO.

Right now, only SB 79 is only going to apply to seven counties - with Orange County coming on board next year.

I would like to have seen something more broad, but that's the reality of getting the votes to pass it.

This is a little concerning. As a vegetarian who just turned 60, I worry about getting enough protein and find protein powders and meal replacements good to meet might needs.

Fortunately, I'm not vegan so I can switch to whey based protein.
michaelcaley.bsky.social
what this appears to show is that something is going on specifically with plant-based and vegan protein powders, and in particular there are two that seem full-on dangerous

but there's very little to nothing wrong with any of the dairy- and meat-based ones www.consumerreports.org/lead/protein...

Only about 1% of transit stops qualify under SB 79. I'm happy it passed into law, but people have this idea that mid-rise apartments are going to sprout up like trees of heaven and that's just not true.
barryjt.bsky.social
Bus lines only qualify if they are bus rapid transit (meeting the state BRT definition, or bus service that is both a major transit stop and has a 24-hour bus-only lane).

Per CalYIMBY, neither Pacific Palisades nor Altadena have qualifying transit stops.
barryjt.bsky.social
There probably aren't many lots in Pacific Palisades that are close enough to a transit stop to qualify. It looks like it is about two miles from the nearest train station to the start of the fire zone.

But the county still doesn't have 15 passenger stations, excluding Amtrak stations.

Even if San Bernardino was SB 79 eligible, I don't think anyone is building there.

But Ontario, Montclair and especially Redlands which has stupid height regulations would certainly benefit.

The BLS reports the median income for a bike mechanic to be roughly $39,360 or about $18.92 an hour.

$57,000 is above the 90th percentile of $49,000.

There are only about 14,000 bike mechanics in the US.

Don't tell your kids to become bike mechanics.

(And probably don't quote Glassdoor.)

Knowing how to fix stuff pays bills.

The average salary for a #BicycleMechanic is $57,109 annually, or $27 per hour, in the US, in line with a national salary average.
Top earners have reported making up to $88,182.
The typical pay range in United States is between $45,696 and $71,940.

If 800 million jobs disappear in the next four years, we are well and truly screwed.
barryjt.bsky.social
Tier 1 which allows the tallest buildings, requires heavy rail OR 72+ trains daily. Tier 2 requires light rail OR 48+ trains daily OR dedicated bus lanes.

Light rail and bus service added after 7/1/2026 won't be eligible as transit-oriented development stops.
barryjt.bsky.social
Just to clarify, because I'm confusing different things.

Amtrak and HSR don't count
barryjt.bsky.social
Something like 217,000 MLB games and has there ever been a double play like that?
barryjt.bsky.social
The Amtrak stations appear to only count if they are very high frequency, which is 48 daily trains.

The bill sponsors state that only San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Orange counties are affected.

I still find it ridiculous that the 4th and 5th most populous counties in the state (and 2 of the largest counties in the country) aren't covered by SB 79.
barryjt.bsky.social
Just because she's a woman doesn't make her not vile.
barryjt.bsky.social
My understanding is that HSR and Amtrak aren't included in the counts for passenger rail stations (probably because they aren't necessarily commuter lines). If so, I'm not sure Brightline would be counted.
barryjt.bsky.social
I used to tell my boss that I was going to put paid admin leave on my performance review as my long term goal.
barryjt.bsky.social
By my count there are only 11 Metrolink stations in San Bernardino County and you need 15 passenger rail stations to qualify for SB 79.
