If I'm honest, there was also sort of a forcing function to them! It made us start early on figuring out how to present fairly complex ideas quickly and accurately enough to start making decisions with--something that we'd have to be able to do for the players eventually anyway!

Obviously we also really leaned into an inverted pyramid doc structure, with big broad bullet points up top, etc. But even that was less successful than showing people some concept art and being like "This is the X region, Y weird thing happens here!"

one of the more fun ideas we had on the possibility space writing team was releasing little podcast-like videos summarizing and discussing the stuff in all of our setting/world documents.

it would be better if everyone had the time/energy/focus to read everything, but barring that...

i don't know why it still surprises me a decade in to my career as a video game writer but it truly is utterly impossible to get anyone to read something. if you have a task that requires reading anything longer than a powerpoint slide, just forget about it
