Oh look English teachers have their lesson plan for the day on how word choice exposes POV.

anointed not elected: reveals contempt with a whiff of religiosity

strode not walked: implies arrogance

cavernous not packed: evokes emptiness, darkness

It’s you, NYT. You are talking about yourself
Shortly after Zohran Mamdani was anointed the mayor-elect of New York City on Tuesday, he strode onto the stage of a cavernous theater in Brooklyn and delivered a victory speech that celebrated New York’s immigrants, working class and young people. Follow live: nyti.ms/3X9h35I

WOW. 81% of women 18-29 voted for Mamdani, 80% for Sherril, and 78% for Spanberger.

Gen Z women aren't playing around.

The woman in this video had just had kidney surgery.
NEW: Footage of a US citizen in Chicago being rammed then dragged from her car on her way to work.

Abducted, with no warrant, her family couldn’t find her for hours.

She was later released with NO CHARGE.

A DHS statement said she “violently resisted arrest, injuring two officers”.

You decide…

Been hearing about how we need a "Democratic Joe Rogan" but have you considered we need a Democratic Zohran Mamdani?

well I for one am shocked that "every aspect of your life gets worse forever and also look at my marble bathroom" did not turn out to be a winning election strategy

Just to note, there is a well documented connection between mass in-person protest and election outcomes. I'm looking forward to the academic papers analyzing No Kings in October and turnout today.
No one should ignore or discount the significant effect that all the organizers of the NO KINGS rallies have had on this election night. It is monumental the influence you have had on this night.
I interact with a lot of young men in my work and this is not surprising. Everyone needs to get off the internet.
Republicans thought they had a permanent hold over young men. They didn't.

Spanberger wins men 18-29 by 14%, Sherrill by 10%, and Mamdani by a stunning 40%.

i can't stop thinking about this video. how the campaign started w/ Mamdani as an unknown basically...just like out reporting on the political apathy in 2024. figuring out why people felt jaded. and then working to bring about the opposite. beyond remarkable www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Tur...

And they have responded via the democratic process which is so heartening
This seems like a huge deal
The gun control legislation bill that even Janet Mills said we shouldn't vote for is running the table tonight, in a famously gun-friendly state

i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist
the other thing about this is that there is no reason to pit these candidates against each other? each are good fits for their respective electorates and each shows the value of vigorous campaigns focused on the stated material problems of voters.
It's exhausting but always with it. And my fellow poll workers are a treat
Final update: we had to use the screwdriver to lock up at the end of the night
well well well
NYC hits 2 million votes, breaking the 1989 record (1.9M) and taking us back to records set in the 1960s!

(1969: 2.4M; 1965: 2.6M)
We are now in the mid-afternoon doldrums period and doing our best to not doze off
Pizza from the mayor and the state rep has arrived. They got it from the good pizza place, well done.
Pollworker conversation has ranged from Islamic art to gnocchi to the shenanigans in the neighborhood last Saturday
I'm not in the Heights, this is behind the charter school
Then the doors to the polling place broke and so I went home to get my screwdriver so I could fix it
Pollworker Chronicles Thread:

All the pollworkers were locked out of our polling place. It's in an elderly housing complex and finally a gentleman in his pajamas yelled out the window for us to ring his apartment and he would buzz us in

We enter Election Day with Councilor Murphy falsely claiming an endorsement by EMS, a city dept that can't endorse candidates.

This BS passes muster in a city where electeds and candidates take for granted who endorses them based on nonstop pandering. It's disrespectful of EMS.

Frank Baker thought it was perfectly appropriate to take a seat at a recent Public Safety Forum.

At least one elected official onstage thought enabling and promoting his candidate was acceptable behavior.

👉🏼 This is yet another example of Old Boston entitlement. “We do what we want with impunity.”
