“When younger people call me mother, or grandmother, I feel as though it’s an honor. To them, it’s like, ‘Here’s an older trans woman who survived, and who’s out there still raising hell.’ Elders can teach the younger people to pick up the fight. In my mind it’s what they must do."
Legendary transgender activist Miss Major dies at 78

This Indigenous Peoples Day please speak up: another typhoon sweeping away homes of Alaska's Natives, who, during settlement (statehood: 1948) were forced to end ways of life (like my Grandma's) involving mobility across regions & stuck them in flood-prone/unstable villages with housing deficits.

We mourn the passing of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a fearless Black trans elder who fought for liberation, dignity, and justice. From Stonewall to decades of advocacy, she taught us to resist, to love fiercely, and to care radically. Her spirit lives on in every fight for collective freedom.
We mourn the passing of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a fearless Black transgender elder whose life embodied the struggle for liberation, dignity, and justice. From the Stonewall uprising to her decades of advocacy for incarcerated trans women and communities of color, Miss Major taught generations to resist oppression and love each other fiercely in the face of state violence. Her legacy is one of radical care and defiant joy, a reminder that true freedom means leaving no one behind. May her spirit continue to guide us as we fight for the world she envisioned.

Rest in power, Miss Major. Your legacy and work will live on.

I’m glad I saw this post it I wouldn’t have known this was airing this week. Somehow the Strib hasn’t seen fit to advertise it via massive op-ed space, front page coverage, idle musing on the biz page, etc.

I think the wealthy of this town are trying to rewrite history with their Precarious State circle jerk on all their corporate stations & papers

I think they don't want us to realize our PBS is telling the accurate history of Mayors & Cops in this town.

Watch Paradox next Tuesday at 7pm on TPT2!

The Strib’s Karen Tolkkinen has devoted column after column after column to her stubborn belief that trans kids are destroying opportunities for girls to compete in sports at school.

It’s her weird mission. She’s fucking obsessed.

Anyway, great letter from Max Maher today.
Karen Tolkkinen's column "Transgender athletes should not compete with girls, but everyone deserves a place to play" (StarTribune.com, Oct. 9) builds its case on emotion, not evi-dence. She acknowledges that "nobody knows how common" transgender athletes are in Minnesota, yet argues for restrictive policies anyway. That's not fairness; that's fear.

There's also no evidence that transgender participation has taken opportunities from anyone. The Minnesota State High School League already reviews eligibility case by case to ensure both inclusion and competitive balance. The system is working as intended - quietly and responsibly.

The idea that girls are being forced to sacrifice is a political talking point, not a measurable fact. What's really being asked of us is whether we believe every student deserves a place to belong, even those whose identity or experience we may not fully understand.

High school sports were never just about winning. They teach teamwork, discipline and self-respect, lessons that lose meaning if we start excluding students who simply want to play. Protecting opportunity for all young people is how we strengthen fairness, not weaken it.

Reupping for today: a thread below on how a Wisconsin county’s myth and image for itself imploded after recent investigations determined the “friendly” Native chief at the center of its identity never existed. www.waupacanow.com/stories/chie...
historicalmarker.bsky.social
A little thread about how attitudes, and markers, change. In July 2024 I went to see the Chief Waupaca marker and site in Waupaca County, Wisc., expecting to see the problematic marker in brown and instead got a different and nuanced story in blue — including that Chief Waupaca never existed. 1/🧵
Original Chief Waupaca historical marker, Marion, Wisconsin. It tells the story of a “friendly Potawatomi Indian” who accepted white settlers as others in his tribe did not, and that he and two of his sons are buried at the site. Entry to Chief Waupaca Historical Site, Marion, Wisconsin. I took this in July 2024. I did not hunt or camp. Current marker at Chief Waupaca Historical Site, Marion, Wisconsin. It tells the story of the myth of Chief Waupaca, where the word Waupaca came from, a detailed history of the Menominee in the region. Taken July 2024.

"You make the best of it all and hope you can help make it a little better for the gurl after you."

- Miss Major, 2023 💔
One of the things I hear with some younger trans people I know is they feel, "I'm gonna get this surgery, and I'm gonna learn that way of speaking, and I'm gonna be done." You're never done. If you're a straight, cisgender person, you're never done. Things are always happening that have the potential to change you. So all I am today is not who I'm gonna be tomorrow, because of the things that happened to me today and later tonight. People forget that. "Oh, after I transition, I'm gonna be through." Well, good luck with that. 'Cause if you're through, then it's time to leave, you know, and I don't wanna go anywhere yet.
I'm in my seventies. Why didn't I stop? Number one is community. My gurls. I've had moments of thinking about stopping, but I didn't. I made sure I would step back, reju- venate myself, and then got back out there, and that's how you make a way. Our stories are not all the same, but the destination is: to get some place where we have some peace and harmony, and we can be at ease with ourselves and the people around us. You make the best of it all and hope you can help make it a little better for the gurl after you.
