Here we go!

Over 13,000 H-1B workers have joined 200+ land-grant, sea-grant, and R1 research institutions so far this fiscal year.

I also found that public institutions in large, Republican states are disproportionately affected by Trump's $100,000 H1-B fee.

EXCLUSIVE: A new analysis by The Xylom's @alexip718.com shows for the first time just how much America’s top research institutions have grown to depend on H-1B skilled workers — and how this delicate balance might be disrupted by U.S. President Donald Trump’s crackdown on legal immigration.

I often cite stats like LA County having a larger population than 40 states.

Or being over 4,000 sq miles. (LA City alone is over 500 sq miles!)

But this one is pretty mindblowing ... just IMMIGRANTS in LA are a larger population than 17 states? Whoa.
sergioperez.bsky.social
If the 3 million immigrants in LA County formed their own state, it would be more populous than 17 existing states.

This is why LA was top of mind for Trump & his ilk.

The County’s moved should be lauded - but this is too little & almost too late.

We need more $$$ and resources for our community.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Exactly two weeks after the Utah Republican Party endorsed map C in Utah’s court-stipulated redistricting process, the party has filed paperwork to run a referendum to repeal map C and an initiative to ask the legislature to repeal Proposition 4.

The Pentagon’s new press policy bars journalists from reporting anything that hasn’t been approved by the Trump regime.

The NYT, Washington Post, Atlantic, and NPR are refusing to sign the agreement.

Kudos to the media outlets standing up to this blatant authoritarianism.

These are not garden-variety, rank-and-file Republicans.
William Hendrix, the Kansas Young Republicans’ vice chair, used the words “n--ga” and “n--guh,” variations of a racial slur, more than a dozen times in the chat. Bobby Walker, the vice chair of the New York State Young Republicans at the time, referred to rape as “epic.” Peter Giunta, who at the time was chair of the same organization, wrote in a message sent in June that “everyone that votes no is going to the gas chamber.”

Giunta was referring to an upcoming vote on whether he should become chairman of the Young Republican National Federation, the GOP’s 15,000-member political organization for Republicans between 18 and 40 years old.

“Im going to create some of the greatest physiological torture methods known to man. We only want true believers,” he continued.

Doing science journalism is hard nowadays. I shared with @theopennotebook.bsky.social a day in my life not because I have everything figured out — far from it — but to show that our career trajectories are inherently messy, and the process of finding ourselves while making an impact is what matters.

Truly unhinged response from Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, who also has used his social media accounts to like a video justifying Israel's bombing of Iran to close off the Strait of Hormuz to establish American petroleum hegemony (yes, that is a real post)

From 2011 to 2022, per the @kansasreflector.com, Kansas' DMV issued 9,316,937 driver's licenses.

During that same timeframe, 380 residents sought to change their gender marker—just 0.004% of all licenses.

The GOP is warning of a "flood" of such changes if they don't re-ban the practice.
the-downballot.com
Holdouts are making it hard for the Kansas GOP to pass a new gerrymander, so party leaders are offering a new incentive: agree to convene a special session and we'll hold a vote on banning trans people from changing their gender on their driver's licenses.

We explain it all in today's Digest →
