You send your poem in
you get a rejection back
you send your poem again
and you shake it all about
“Time makes you a stranger in your own life.”
My sister tells me, as she leans forward,
wine on her breath
she tells me.
Both of us a little drunk
She tells me.
About her math teacher
and how he wasn’t a safe man.

This is an old post, so I’m sorry to be late to the party, but my favorite is Modern Haiku!

I also enjoy Acorn, Chrysanthemum (a bilingual English & German publication), Wales Haiku Journal, Failed Haiku, and Under the Bashō.
Anyone planning on being at the HSA Southern Regional Haiku Conference next month?

Illustration of a white skull partially obscured by colorful mushrooms and plants. Different fungi sprout from and around the skull, including red mushrooms with white spots, yellow fan-shaped mushrooms, gray cluster mushrooms, and orange bulbous mushrooms, with green and purple plants filling the background. A ribbon at the bottom of the skull reads “ADMIT ONE.”

Happy Wednesday! There is new poetry from me in the world today!

Check out the latest issue of Chrysanthemum for a new haiku. This issue has some beautiful poetry, and I'm glad to be included in the TOC. It's also exciting to have a piece translated into German for this bilingual journal.

People truly went feral during the height of the pandemic. The sharp and sudden increase in antisocial behavior was shocking, and it remains high.
Watching antisocial driver behavior in the school drop-off line makes it really clear that the pandemic destroyed whatever few shreds remained of the social compact, just pathological selfishness on display every day

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

You’re not “too old for it to do any good now.” You’re actually the perfect age to start the thing or change the thing or finally get diagnosed with the thing.
Those who are 35+, what advice do you have for people just entering their 30s?
Enjoyed playing brunch bartender while gabbing about Taylor Swift’s new album
A chocolate martini on a cocktail napkin with a cowgirl in a martini glass saying “Let’s go, girls.” A whiskey sour next to the recipe card An Ophelia cocktail (highball glass, rosemary garnish) being held in a hand A french blonde cocktail next to half a grapefruit
I was singing (Taylor Swift) in the kitchen (as you do), and my (docked) Roomba made a noise and shut itself down 😭 Everyone’s a critic.
Ooh, I hadn’t picked up on that, but you’re right!

I like how the entire album evokes both songs from her previous albums and classic songs from past greats.
My favorite thing about new Taylor Swift music days is the dozen text message threads I have open with my friends 🫶 Art brings people together
Yes! The shorter album allows for so much more curation and a stronger album.
I also cannot wait to hear @ecatherine.com’s thoughts on the album
The last song was what I assumed the entire album would be, but frankly I’m relieved it’s not; I think having every song on that topic would have gotten old.

I was expecting an entire album of Clara Bow & Nothing New, & I like the thematic variety she brought instead while still making it cohesive.
As of the first two listens, my top three songs are Opalite, Actually Romantic, and Cancelled, but there isn’t a single one that I didn’t enjoy.

I wanted to love Fate of Ophelia more, but the lyrics of the second verse felt a little weak to me. Still screaming the chorus at the top of my lungs.
I will be withdrawing from the world for a while to meditate on Taylor Swift’s new album.
Okay, but that is exactly the type of journal I want to be reading. Let me cronch the prose!!
We need more fancy places to put our bones
