Digitalization may objectively create winners and losers, but political alignment for now is driven by ideological perceptions of structural change. Our research suggests that as digitalization accelerates, partisan divides between mainstream parties and radical parties may deepen.

We argue this divide reflects broader ideological evaluations of structural economic change seen as opportunity or threat.
Voters of radical parties are more pessimistic about digitalization:
- less likely to see growth benefits
- more negative about effects for all social groups

Next, we examine how support aligns with the main lines of political conflict.
Voters of mainstream left and mainstream right voters look remarkably similar and are consistently more supportive.
Voters of far-left and far-right parties are the most skeptical.

Standard political economy predicts support should track self-interest: knowledge-economy “winners” (educated, urban, young, high-skill) in favor; “losers” (routine, rural, lower-skill) opposed.
We find weak evidence for support linked to socio-structural self-interest.

We test our hypotheses with original survey data from five EU countries (Germany, France, Sweden, Poland, and Italy; 3,500 respondents per country) and detailed measures of support for actual digitalization policies, expected economic impact, and perceptions of the main beneficiaries.

We use the case of the Next Generation EU (NGEU) program, totaling nearly 800,000 million euros with at least 20% earmarked to expedite digitalization in Europe, as a substantively and theoretically important case to test theories about the political fault lines such policies generate.

Elon Musk chatbot repeatedly making CSAM on demand should be one of the single biggest stories right now and it's effectively a collective shrug instead
Ashley St. Clair @stclairashley Just saw a photo that Grok produced of a child no older than four years old in which it took off her dress, put her in a bikini + added what is intended to be semen. ChatGPT does not do this. Gemini does not do this. Another girl who appears to be just 11 or 12 with a brain tumor, Grok removed her shirt completely. Stating that the people producing the prompts are the only ones responsible puts an undue burden on victims, most of which have no idea this is happening. This problem + exploitation of children could be fixed in a matter of minutes by the MechaHitler team.

The Nature of Our Power: A Conversation with political scientist Erica Chenoweth By Rebecca Solnit • 8 Feb 2025 View in browser "The best study on the subject in my opinion suggests that in the long term, institutions really can’t save us; that civil society and mass mobilization are a more potent check on a backsliding democracy in the long term than relying on institutional checks and balances alone." That's what political scientist Erica Chenoweth told me when I asked them if we could have a conversation (by email, below in full) about the current constitutional crisis/coup attempt and what we can do about it. Chenoweth is a hugely influential scholar of nonviolent social change, best known for their empirical research that not only documents what makes civil resistance work but demonstrates that it works, often extremely effectively. They direct the Nonviolent Action Lab, which studies how people have built movements and developed strategies to resist authoritarianism successfully and documents how nonviolence can be effective. There's no one I wanted to hear from more in this constitutional crisis, and I'm grateful I can share their insights with all of you.
