I hate it when this sort of thing happens. Was playing 2013 Strider a few weeks back for the first time, beat the final boss (including getting an achievement for doing so) but it just... didn't die. Had to do the entire fight over and thankfully it died correctly the second time.

When you're a "high performing" person it easy to acknowledge in the abstract that burnout is something that happens to people but then it's shocking when all of a sudden it happens to you, and even more shocking when clawing back up to a normal level of functioning takes so god damn long.

Believe old game devs when we tell you: burnout is real, it's painful. Be honest with yourself, take the breaks when you need them.
I've been burnt out for so long, I only just realized how long. I went from crunch at Iridium into crunch at Giant Squid with no break. About 3 years. It was too long.

Starting to back up my emulation setup. Now that holding the xbox button on a controller brings up a task view, I'm going to try to bifurcate a bit so Kodi isn't pulling double duty on media and retro games.

Best guess is that maybe there was an English release planned at one point, so they recorded the lines for it. There's only about a dozen or so of them. In the end it never did leave Japan, but the recordings still ended up on the disk.

I consider the presence of the unused English voice clips to be a lucky accident at best, though they do help sell the authenticity of the patch!

It doesn't really "have english on the disk" in the way a multi-language region-detecting game (or even something like Wizardry GBC) does. It took assembly mods to swap out the voice clips, and I had to redraw the level briefs entirely. There isn't a lot of language in this but most *was* in JP.

And yes I'm covering the EPROM windows as soon as I can. In the meantime it's being stored in the dark (either in the NES itself, or in a black sleeve in a drawer.)
