Last thought on Platner, I sincerely think he has a leadership opportunity here - he should drop out, get his tattoo cover up, and dedicate himself to working for de-radicalization orgs, specifically for white men seeking to get out of fascist circles. Ex-MAGA need an offramp to rejoin society.

Right, this too - that he's had this tattoo for 20 years and has only now said he'll get it fixed because it's hurting him politically is a very strong red line, but he's also made so many troubling statements about why he signed up and his views on military conflicts that are all big red flags.

The Indian Wars, the Phillipines, Haiti and Nicaragua in the 1920's, Vietnam, Nicaragua and El Salvador again in the 80's. As for would have, I "did" for Iraq and would love to get to the Ghan. Small wars are pretty enjoyable. It's the big ones, with days of artillery fire and inhuman brutality that take the fun out of fighting.
But small wars (and Iraq
and Afghanistan are indeed small wars) provide the rush of small combat actions along with the intellectual challenge of building personal relationships and infrastructure within the local community. Small wars are thinking wars, which I much prefer over the bloody slugfests of great power conventional warfare. Oh, and the revolution, because I'm Amuuurican. permalink context

In political organizing, there is often a time-lag between peaceful mass protests and the impact of the community building that takes place during and after them. And you often won’t be aware of the linkage between the latter and the former unless you’re part of the organizing process.

Can I ask, what did the No Kings protest actually accomplish? I mean, in real terms, what have these protests materially changed? I can't help but feel these one off protests are merely a heatsink for energy and anger rather than a path for meaningful change and disruption of the system.

Also fascinating is the cognitive dissonance on display when someone smugly says "don't sign up for a protest/any circulated petitions or follow-up contact sheets" and then a minute later says urges filling out a sign up form on a completely opaque website owned by a couple people no one knows.

My read is that there’s no overlap, but tbh I hope there is. National formal organizing groups need to be networking with anarchist decentralized movements just as much as with grassroots organizations and labor - at present, none of these levels are working together effectively or meaningfully.

I genuinely hope Indivisible calls for a General Strike the Sunday and Monday following the next rally date, in part because it's good practice for the long term sustained one that we actually need, and in part to show all the terminally online folks that planning a GS isn't just filling out a form.
