Kanazawa City Hall (金沢市役所) behind yukitsuri, preserving frames for trees from snow unique to this region: It's my primitive habit to take pictures of govt buildings.

Another postcard from my research on the late Meiji era. The woman is playing a koto. Used as a backdrop, an ancient cherry tree is supported by wooden struts, a technique known as yukitsuri. (Some species of cherry trees do have a tendency to lean.) The card dates from 1908. #Japan #history

Yukitsuri is a technique that has been in practice since the Edo Period. This is where a series of ropes are strung over trees in an umbrella-like appearance to protect them from heavy snow during the winter months. #photography #travelphotography #japan #yukitsuri

Photo from a while ago: Kyoto, Japan

A scenic one for you! It was closed for works when I got there, but still easy on the eye.

Most visitors to Japan stick to Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka. All lovely but there's a lot to explore. I'm looking forward to visiting the galleries on Naoshima and the yukitsuri (snow protection for trees) that will be in both Korakuen and Kenrokuen gardens. Reckon 3 weeks will sharpen my language skills too.

Big day walking around Okayama, including an afternoon at Korakuen garden (one of the big three perfect gardens in Japan). Absolutely exquisite scenery and autumn colours. No yukitsuri yet, but many trees with winter protections in place. Wrapped up with a terrific golden ale at Kawazu brewing. 😕
