@fasterthanlime in 2021 i wrote a small app using xslt for.... some reason? it was a miserable experience the whole time and i had no real reason to in the first place i don't remember why i did. anyway i remember thinking "there is no way that there are not 50 critical vulns in the browser […]

dang. yeah. If it were something like:

<meta>a=b</meta><meta>c=d</meta>

It would be trivial for 1.0, but as written, you'd probably have to go down the XSLT 1.0 Recursion Funhouse Slide For Doing Basic String Stuffs, and there are better tools at that point :(

I'll be the angel on your shoulder

You should go for it!

It's daunting at first because few things are like xslt, but it's also kinda awesome if you can get into a groove with it.

(also I'm just curious to see the problem or the results)

Generally speaking I remain bullish on this sort of thing being a great construct to build stuff with, but agree with the premise of the group that existing systems are too complicated to use in real systems. If we're at XSLT complexity today, what's the JSON of the content addressed world?

Don’t do it! XSLT is unnecessarily complex, and then in the end it doesn’t do what you want, and you end up writing code anyways for extension functions.

I was going to use XSLT to convert between two configuration files, just for the lulz.

But then I looked at the XSLT examples and smiled no more.

Legislative Documents in XML at the United States House of Representatives

You can even visit each roll call vote as XML transformed into HTML tables by XSLT

RSS was painful. @astro.build has RSS utils, but MDX throws a big goofy wrench into it. I needed @kentcdodds.com's mdx-bundler for the unholy workaround of bundling MDX -> converting to React -> rendering React to string

I also used XSLT to style the feed a bit

WASM has “very few users” but “it’s the future” so browser devs won’t deprecate it against community wishes, as they’ve done to the “very few users” of XSLT such as governments, the publishing industry, healthcare businesses with XML as data, etc.

I still vaguely recall (with horror) working on a project that required us to use XML and XSLT.

Update i did it in xslt first because i thought it would be funny but i dont think im going to go through with that it sucks too much. mainly because IE5's implementation is buggy and nonstandard lol. if you're interested it did it like this. and obviously it is not designed for this
