I ♥️trees. We're converting a hillside cornfield to a food forest. They bank carbon. As forests grow older, eventually the rate of CO2 removed is balanced by decomposition, ... produce fields 33% less efficiently. It is the CHANGE IN USE that changes net CO2.

Trees are wonderful clean carbon sequestration plants, but photosynthesis is far slower than the scale of human combustion of coal, oil and gas.
The lecture by Dr. Scott Wing, Curator of Fossil Plants at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History said that half of 200 million years of photosynthesis that had then been sequestered into coal, oil, and gas had been used up to date. Matching that statement to the papers and data published by the UCSUSA. Together they inspired the ridiculous yet scary at scale estimate of 5,475 years of plant sequestration PER DAY of human combustion of fossil fuels.
The UCSUSA data cited papers stating that since 1751, humans had released 1,480 gigatons of CO2 (GtCO2). Dr. Scott Wing said that was about 100 million years of sequestration.
With far greater precision we know human industrial combustion has released another 405 GtCO2 in the last 11 years. That is an additional 27.4% (or 27,400,000 years of sequestration) as modeled above... burned in 11 years (or 4,017 days).
For the past 11 years, humans have burned fossil fuels at a rate of over 6,800 years of sequestered photosynthesis per day of human consumption.

Short term, humans can use techniques like biochar mixed into soil to undo some of the harm, but plant respiration and decomposition of fallen leaves, branches and trees reaches a balance.

Chris Martenson's Crash Course long taught the problem of reduced Energy Return on Energy Invested (EROEI) The need to also do Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) makes it worse. Yet, all the IPCC pathways for keeping survivable planetary temperatures rely on CCS.

The prognosis for having photosynthesis save us from our industrial society's binge party on sequestered carbon has another problem. Earth has passed the optimal temperature for photosynthesis during the primary growing season. The mix of C3 and C4 plants that have evolved during the last 3 million years of Ice Ages can not efficiently handle the temperatures conditions of the Pliocene that current atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations are generating

Here, we use the largest continuous carbon flux monitoring network to construct the first observationally derived temperature response curves for global land carbon uptake. We show that the mean temperature of the warmest quarter (3-month period) passed the thermal maximum for photosynthesis during the past decade. At higher temperatures, respiration rates continue to rise in contrast to sharply declining rates of photosynthesis.
