Sunlight penetrated the canopies and dappled the leaf covered path they followed. Moss and various fungi covered as many surfaces as possible. Mushrooms of several hues and species fruited all over. The leaves of the trees swayed softly with the breeze. Rory could not get enough photos of the scenery. He wondered for not the first time if he had enough film for the rest of the hike. To Owen, however, trees were becoming more, somehow, as if scooting closer and closer to block the brothers in. They weren't any taller than the trees from before, and yet, when he looked up, he felt a dizzying, overwhelming sense that he couldn't actually see the leaves of the trees, but the bottom gills of giant mushrooms.

The legacy of fairy goes hand in hand with the legacy of humanity. Perhaps, it goes even beyond. Perhaps the oddness we feel and attribute to these beings is the weirdness of our brains.

Or, perhaps they are simply beings of multiple dimensions. I've often contemplated this. #TBBPrompt

The shadow shifted, trembling, a multitude of shadows, like many light sources had cast it, blurred on the edges, drawing forward a mitten-like hand, clarifying slowly with some bit of effort. The edges never became entirely crisp, but like an object dangling far from the surface getting gradually closer, the shadow formed purposefully: five fingers, in a distinctly human-like shape. Whatever it was, it was difficult for it to interact meaningfully, and it was trying hard, wanting to present itself as a person. The hand-shadow remained, laid onto Sylvan’s sketchpad paper, and Sylvan drew his pencil closer, resting the tip where the base of the heel of the palm would have been. Slowly he drew, cautiously tracing the terminus. When he was done, he lifted his pencil and gazed down into the line drawing, a contour of a thumb, a palm, and four fingers.

You know what, #TBBPrompt? I'm quite glad that people don't believe fairy tales to be vestigial. Old tales still live on in our modern times, retold in so many ways. They are certainly remnants of the past. But, they are not useless, leftover bits. They are awesome.

In his sleek, slim, humanoid form, there was no proof that he had ever been anything else, that he once owned colossal, feathered wings. He rested his hands on his back, closer to his hips, up on his waist. Not a bit of muscle, or a knot of vestigial bone to tell him as much, just smooth, uninterrupted skin, human-passing in shape and silhouette. Falco could have been lying to him; it would have been easy to think that he was. But Azra knew what Falco said was true. Because he remembered.

It's not often i learn a new word, and so I won't!! I refuse! YOU CAN'T MAKE ME.

Okay but this is actually a fun one. Let's examine Kingdom Keep, which is literally a tower of gold coins with a crown and a castle on top. It's the ugliest, most obscene expression of wealth in Nap City. #tbbprompt
A cyberpunk cityscape. In the background is a giant, like obscenely huge building that looks like an irregularly stacked tower of gold coins. A giant crown atop the stack holds a castle inside. People here had spent trillions to get the view of a gas giant out their windows. They built their towers tall, as though one more storey would make those shifting clouds close enough to touch. And there were many towers. Silvered, black, twisting and crude, golden rainbows of curving glass. Every shape was represented here, every possible way to build a skyscraper that could withstand earthquakes, winds, and most importantly: impressions. Beauty provided its own security. If everyone loved the shape of your building, they would be far less likely to bomb it. As if to challenge that conceit, Kingdom Keep was the most garish structure in Financial, and in fact the entirety of Nap City. A stack of golden coins wider than a city block rose hundreds of storeys into the sky, above the atmospheric walls, above even the ziggurat-shaped Vault of Nineveh. Atop those coins sat a golden crown large enough to be a stadium, holding inside it a barely-legal rip-off off of the Disney Castle turned evil, with vaulting granite walls, obsidian shingles for the twisting turrets, and angular battlements more offensive than de. All modified and supported by modern materials and electronic security countermeasures.

Dusty flipped the bacon with his tongs, careful not to splatter any grease on himself. He chided himself mentally for agreeing to help the freakish, whatever-the-hell Fisk was. If only it weren't for that feral grin. If only Fisk hadn't saved Dusty's life. If only Fisk hadn't accidentally found his way into Dusty's world. He heard the shuffling of feet from behind and tried not to visibly stiffen. His insides clenched as tightly as his teeth did in that moment. Fisk noticed Dusty stiffen. He grimaced. He knew his new, human companion didn't understand why he did what he did. He itched the side of his head as he thought of what to say, as he thought of a way to fix this. He had to fix this. Dusty didn’t turn around to acknowledge Fisk. "Smells good", Fisk said, doing his best to muster a cheerful, friendly tone. "It's bacon. They'll be eggs. Toast, too. Hope it's something you can eat", Dusty replied in a flat tone. Fisk flinched internally. He had a lot to make up for. "About last night…"

Why come talk to me if you know everything already?” My frustration is breaking the surface; even I can hear it in my voice. Shame chases it, that I’m letting him get to me. Z: “Hey, who said I know everything? You’re just as much a mystery to me as them. Allow a man his curiosity.” I deflate, despite myself. His tone is light and mollifying. Maybe I’m misreading him? Y: (hesitantly) “Ask directly next time.” Gaze flicking off somewhere else, his lips push out in an exaggerated expression of consideration. Then the grin is back. Z: “Mmmm. But this is more fun?” Those feral eyes pin me again with an intensity I can’t decode, eliciting a not-unpleasant shiver. I’m failing social math to begin with, so this conversational calculus is well beyond me. Z: “Anyway, gotta jet. Be seeing you, Yuri.” Dirt crunches under his heel as he spins on it to saunter away. The chuckle that floats back burns my ears. I stare after him, unsure if I want to be considered ‘fun’ to a predator.

For this weeks' #tbbprompt I bring you a long snippet of the Commercial District's prison-mall interior and wild exterior. Who cares what's outside when you live in a tube, pretending everything is just the way it's always been?

Unlike the other districts, most of Commercial was open to the alien air. The climate walls were only built around Xinghua’s Jade Arch and a few choice amenity zones, and a dwarven citadel that had magically appeared thirty years ago in their prime residential neighbourhood, to the consternation of Xinghua’s C-suite. The rest of the district was constructed with economy in mind, mostly armored towers with all their beauty built inwards. Tunnels connected the buildings, allowing the denizens and shoppers of this land to travel without ever even noticing they lived on an alien world. Consumption was the name of the game here, endless and thoughtless. Despite the traffic, Nil could fly as insanely as she liked so long as she didn’t crash—no one was looking, not even the cops. The only benefit of this labyrinthian store was that here, the native Utna fauna and Khesper refugees existed without much harassment. So much of the District was confined to the interior of structures that the outside was left to the cars and beasts. The omnipresent mushroom smell mixed with the sulphurous odor of hellhound shit. Flocks of flies buzzed between the towers, ridden by sparkling pixies. An entire little feral subculture right under Xihua’s nose. As if they cared.

But how could I not? You’d have to be completely devoid of empathy to be unmoved by his dead, soft, disembodied voice. Though, there was a time I thought I was hallucinating him. That’d I’d gotten too close to an infiltration or had lost my mind from overwork. I’d check and re-check the data to reassure myself that there was something there.
