Just found out you can drop a png called "(script name) Icon" into a folder in your unity project and all scriptableObjects based on it will update their icons to match. that makes my menus SO much nicer to look at

insight time!

some weeks ago I've optimize memory usage via transferring enemy properties to ScriptableObjects.
This way values such as MoveSpeed or MaxHealth are stored in only one place.

- Localization (!!!!)
- Debugging/Cheat tools that you can also use in builds
- Scene Management
- Object Pooling
- Generally setting up your systems so that any data you need is serialized separately (see ScriptableObjects in Unity or Custom Resources in Godot)

I've been working with ScriptableObjects while making Unity games for like 6 years now and I still fuck up and design entire systems that accidentally alter the object itself even to this day

One is a save data system based on scriptableobjects, with dynamic callbacks and a custom editor. It's pretty useful to me, but you have to be willing to write code to integrate it, so most people that would find it useful are capable of making it themselves.

Unity's ScriptableObjects live outside the scene and stay in memory only when needed. Ideal for large datasets like inventory items or dialogue trees. #UnityTips #optimization

Me daba pereza ponerme con Godot y estuve trasteando con el Shadergraph de Unity y... ¡nope!

Es como volver a no tener ScriptableObjects, pero con shaders. Me quedo con los BetterShaders hasta que Unity saque su 'clon oficial' dentro de mil años...

I'm spending some time making some of my classes serializable so that I can get save files working for my game.

... I've gotten used to some Unity-isms like: no built-in support for de/serializing references to ScriptableObjects 😂 at least ISerializationCallbackReceiver exists 🤷‍♂️

Been mostly getting the backend for combat resources up and running, so that everything is fairly future-proofed. This meant a lot of iteration on code as I learned new ways to restructure it all. Turns out, Custom Resources (or ScriptableObjects) are your friend when making a database of stuff.

Any variables that got affected during dialogue stuck since ScriptableObjects retain any changes done on them during runtime. Solution is to have cloning functions but this can be cumbersome and sometimes hard to trust.
