That was my first thought, but the foliage color was more Acer than Liquidambar. Then I zoomed in, and the leaves wasn't as star-shaped as the sweet gum. The bark looked smooth and the lighter gray of a maple sapling. Good choice. No gum balls!

Still some decent fall foliage around the yard, especially in the shrub and herbaceous layer. Some notable trees that hang onto their leaves: Bigtooth Aspen, Chestnut Oak, Larch (tamarack)

I started growing a maple sapling that sprouted in our flower box and now I have a tiny tree.

What do I do with it over winter? Do I leave it outside to live like it would or bring it in and baby it?

Back into the house for some warm drinkies, as the snow has arrived this weekend -- garden ready or not!

I'm here, celebrating how much we got done this weekend prior to the flurries. Teen and I cut and painted all the invasives next to the house. Then they did all the downspouts' maintenance! 🌱
Our super awesome and super full rain barrel drains into a red 1 gallon bucket. A landscaping rock covers the intake hole on top, where we removed the hose from the downspout. I managed to transfer about half this barrel's worth of water into a plastic tub for use on houseplants. The rest, sadly, had to get drained. That's what happens when you get heavy late season rains, I guess. The teenager proudly holds up the 12 foot tall, 3 inch diameter maple sapling they removed. It volunteered itself and was growing about 2 feet next to our house. Teen prefers that I block their face off with smiley faces rather than blurry spots, so that's why I sloppily drew one one. They also love giving thumbs up for a job well done. I support that. It's their choice, y'know.

New street trees took root today at Leavenworth and Clay on Russian Hill, thanks to the efforts of our arborist crews and community volunteers working together to get them planted. Have a good life trees! Welcome to our urban forest. #LoveOurCity

Working together, volunteers and Public Works urban forestry crews pound stakes after the sapling goes in the ground. Once a tree is planted and staked, it gets water to help it thrive.

This baby Chinquapin oak sapling grew by our garden gate, likely from an acorn buried by a squirrel. Since an oak tree blocking a gate isn’t great we moved it 6 weeks ago. So far it’s done very well. We won’t live to see it get more than 10-15 feet tall but hope it survives 🤞

I got this Japanese Maple tree from my Father’s yard, planted it about 25 years ago as a sapling. It’s always beautiful in the Fall and makes me think of him. 😎

A poplar tree sapling hangs onto its only leaves at the end of fall along the St. Vrain Creek at Roger's Grove Nature Area in Longmont, Colorado.
