Autumn on the #RoyalCanal under Pike Bridge in #Maynooth.
A square view of greenish yellow bushes reflected in mirror-smooth water and framed by a stone bridge. The crop rightly frames the edges of the bridge’s stone arch on the top and right edges, and the arch’s reflection on the bottom edge, while the symmetry is broken on the right by the black metal railings around the towpath which narrows the left side of the canal to squeeze under the bridge.

The warm morning light was beautiful, but it cast big shadows at Pike Bridge over the line and the #RoyalCanal, so colour wan’t going to work. Hence, another monochrome shot of #RPSI 4-4-0 stram loco No.131 as it coasts towards #Maynooth with a Santa Special.
A wide black & white shot in portrait orientation taken directly over twin railway tracks running to the right of a canal. A black steam locomotive with a Santa head on the front of the boiler and a Santa Special headboard pulls a long train of vintage carriages towards the viewer on the right track. I ventured down the section of the #RoyalCanal east of #Leixlip Confey station. The towpath has yet to be redeveloped here, so it gets pretty wild pretty quick, and apart from the odd jogger and dog walker you meet much fewer people. The #IrishRail Commuter trains still break up the solitude though.

There are wild roses along my usual stretch of the #RoyalCanal, but this one along the same canal in #Leixlip looked a little different. Turnsnoutninwas right! This is a field-rose (rather than a dogrose) — it has much denser and yellower stamens at its center! #bloomscrolling

The ducklings on the #RoyalCanal grow up so fast! These young mallards have already turned brown and are about half as big as their mommy duck already! This little family is resting of the quay side at Pike Bridge at the gate to Carton House east of #Maynooth.
Three brown ducks on a stone slab on the edge of water. The two ducks in front are noticeably smaller and have less intricate patterning, while the bigger duck behind has white detailing along the edges of her feathers. All three ducks are hunkered down resting with their beaks on their backs, but all have at least one one eye open.

An #IrishRail Commuter #train in it's way to #Maynooth runs along the banks of the #RoyalCanal having just passed the 13th lock and Blakestown level crossing. The freshly re-developed tow path makes this an idyllic place for a walk or cycle!

The recent cold snap has had many moods, sleaty mush, freezing mist, and idyllic winter sun. This view of Jackson's bridge on the #RoyalCanal west of #Maynooth was on one of those idyllic mornings.

You know summer is coming when the Yellow aflag Irises burst into bloom along the #RoyalCanal. #maynooth #bloomscrolling

A close top-down view of a large yellow flower at the top of a tall stalk rising there are a mix of tall grass-like spikes of dark green leaves and green toilet-brush like plants in the background below. The yellow flower has three 2” large widely spaced petals that start thin and widen in to rounded notched tongues as they curve down towards the ground. There are distinct ribs running up the narrow parts of the petals, and noticeably darker veins in the wider parts.

The #RPSI preserved former #GNRi 4-4-0 steam loco No. 131 working 'the Midlander' to Maynooth yesterday. Here she's running along the #RoyalCanal as she slower for her arrival into #Maynooth.

The train is crossing from left to right on the far bank, and there are wild flowers in bloom along the near bank which forms the foreground. The majority of the flowers are red poppies, with some white meadowsweet. A family of swans swimming in a relatively well organised line along the #RoyalCanal in #Leixlip.
A pair of white adult swans and six smaller grey signets swimming from left to right across a strip of clear dark water in a very green canal. There are carpets of lily pads along both banks, tall green reeds at each edge, and green trees behind. The parents are bringing up the rear with five signets in the lead, and one straggler a little further back between the parents.

Last month I was surprised to find someone had hung a rusted beer can in a tree along the #RoyalCanal, then last week there was another one just a few tens of yards away, this time a brand new one. Clearly, someone who uses the canal west of #Maynooth has a thing for hanging cans in trees!

With appropriately warm gear, it really was beautiful along the rural stretch of the #RoyalCanal west of #Kilcock during the recent cold snap.
