Yet in Italy, San Remo, in the north west corner of the country, gets a diverted railway line and a brand new underground railway station. The Okehampton route would be welcome but is simultaneously unambitious and overpriced.

Several studies have shown that a diversionary route, especially the former North Devon line through Okehampton and Tavistock would cost over £1bn.
Little chance of that when most of the money will go to yet more London schemes

Cost Cutters says "Cutting cost, not quality" yet is the *only place* that sells a basic big coke bottle for 3.45 where we live (Okehampton).
Ten slices of extremely short shelf-life meat for sandwiches and wraps for 5 quid or more if no 2 for 5 deal going on in WR at the moment
Life is unaffordable

If they'd said "a gateway" I'd probably agree.
Because multiple towns claim "gateway to Dartmoor", and I think it's ok for such a big space to have multiple entry points.

Otherwise they can jog on, because surely Ivybridge and Okehampton have better claims than Bovey?

2/3 The heavy rain also washed out the line between Exeter & Crediton, cutting off the train line to Okehampton.
Initially there was an announcement that there'd be no rail replacement buses to Okehampton. Oh, & because the road through town is shut the regular buses are diverted from most of town.

Having struggled with transport to get west of Exeter this week, I need to say something to everyone who has in the last week or so responded to the crumbling seawall at Dawlish with "they need to reopen the train line from Okehampton to Tavistock!"

Just watching BBC spotlight reporting on disruption due to gas upgrade work in Okehampton area. If you look at the gas transmission company website- it's needed for "gases of the future"
Obviously urgent safety work needs doing but do we need to be heavily investing at this point.

Well, it's National Library Lovers Month AND I Love to Read Month! And so here I am with Carol from Okehampton library. I well remember how the libraries at Coulsdon & Purley in the 60s opened new worlds to me. They still do! @LibrariesUnLtd @BoldwoodBooks #GoAllIn #BorrowBoldly

The work is still ongoing following Storm Chandra, with ballast being washed away in numerous sections along the Barnstaple and Okehampton lines. https://www.railadvent.co.uk/2026/02/repairs-progress-following-flooding-in-cornwall-and-devon.html #barnstaple #cornwall #devon

Even with all the previous, these dudes in Okehampton are a *lot* better than my previous, Bude surgery.
The lead asshole there got told I have severe suicidal urges and I need help.
He LITERALLY SHRUGGED, said "Yeah lots of that nowadays" and did *nothing*.
No meds. No referrals.
Nothing.
Zero.

In my example, our local surgery (Okehampton Medical Centre) refuses to allow people to even send online requests for appointments if you attempt it outside of their opening hours.
Literally *why* is it this way? If you spot something late Friday, oh well - wait till monday to be told to wait S'more

LOL no. This is from last summer. To get up there I would have to take two trains to Okehampton, then a bus to Moretonhampstead, then walk the rest. Tomorrow, because the buses don't run today and in any case the Moretonhampstead line is blocked I think.
