Novelvember Day 9: My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix. I absolutely LOVED this book. Reminded me a lot of the books by R.L. Stine that I read when I was younger. An interesting take on Exorcism horror.

His hand raised higher, twisted upwards as if receiving a gift from the heavens. The walls of the room slid upwards with a soft grinding sound, revealing six statues, each standing exactly behind the chairs of the Vigils present. They were about eight feet tall and looked as if they were made of white marble. Their clothing—no, armor— was exquisitely detailed. Each held an unsheathed sword, point down, hilt clenched between mailed fists. The steel gleamed in the wan light of the room, reflecting against the very familiar faces. Each statue’s face was frozen into a look of serenity, and each was carved to look exactly like the Vigil standing in front of them.

Novelvember Day 3: War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. One hell of an undertaking, but it was worth reading. This is the type of novel that you take your time with, like nursing a fine wine.

On the plus side, he had a ready-made group of fanatics who would gleefully murder Vigiles members without hesitation. That saved a lot of time. The problem was that he couldn’t use his usual shock-and-awe, “I am an ancient god, worship and fear me” methods of keeping them in line. Ezekiel would shoot him. Finn would shoot him. Riley would shoot him twice. Charlie would try to convince him to be a nice and tame dragon and live in a bar somewhere, and when that didn’t work would probably shoot him.

Another strong day and I've turned a chapter that was most ideas and random sentences into something with structure. And murder. Two murders, to be precise.

About the same with 2293 words! Knocked out a bunch of the early quests, too.

“The Lurker” is a meta-humor horror story for writers. Our protagonist endures torture in the form of having their zero draft corrected with a red pen.

“What are you doing?” You tilt your head.
“Let’s start with chapter one, shall we?” The Lurker places the tip of the red pen against the paper.
Your fingers tense. Though you’ve tried to break this glass before, you consider it again. Rip the pages from him; don’t let him massacre your hard work.
As he reads your opening sentence out loud, your soul almost leaves your body. You beg him to stop but he raises his voice to traipse through the opening.
After the first page he addresses you with the voice of a vice principal. “You will sit and listen to the edits, or I will make you sit and listen to the edits.”
You hug yourself with one arm as your stomach churns. The revelation that he has been reading it is humiliating enough, he need not go further.
“Sit,” he commands. “Listen, and all will be forgiven.”
“Alright,” you squeak. Your knees shake as you pull up the rolling chair from your desk.
He reads paragraph two with a grimace. “You do a lot of telling rather than showing,” he pontificates.
You shake your head in confusion.
“What I mean to say is show me Rada is strong in ways he does not know. Don’t just say Rada is strong in ways he does not know.” His voice switches to a mocking tone, while he repeats the sentence.
You open your mouth to explain you’ll fix it in editing.
“DO NOT SPEAK!” His eyes shoot a needle through your lips to sew them shut. He turns back to the page. “Where were we? Yes, I really should get you a book on grammar. Your use of commas is…well lacking.”
As he continues the session, you oscillate between a pit of despair and mentally noting any advice of use. You grip each armrest on the rolling chair, as if you need to hold yourself down. You’d give anything to snatch the pages from his hand and burn them.
“There’s only two people in this scene. You don’t need so many dialogue tags,” the Lurker says. “While we’re on the subject, I hate to tell you this, but an ellipsis is not in itself...

You settle into your chair as he begins the next assault on your prose. He grows quiet after a few minutes, reading three pages in that time. You grow hopeful he finally sees your vision. Perhaps after getting your bearings, you were able to tell Rada’s story the way you intended it. Rada the Mage is an epic, swords clashing, colorful magic, slow motion walking while the castle explodes behind the main character. If you could just get your vision onto the page, you know it would be something special.
“Hmmm.” He taps his lips with the red pen before making another notation.
“What is it?” you ask cautiously.
The Lurker raises his head and chews his cheek in contemplation. The little light of optimism grows. Maybe you surprised him; your writing needs work but it could be everything you dreamt of, everything you promised forums of total strangers.
The Lurker sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose. “Because I am generous, I will accept ‘that’ as a word, even when removing it doesn’t change the meaning of the sentence at all. I’m just letting you know when you edit, you’ll remove hundreds of thats.”
“Oh,” is the only syllable your mouth is capable of.
He resumes reading but your resolve gives way each time the pen touches paper.
“Alright,” he says at long last. “That’s the first five thousand words. Do you want to hear what I thought of it?”
“Not particularly?” You shrug.
He merely resumes speaking. “So, I see your primary issue is you just saying all the world building information.”
“Yes, well there’s a lot the reader has to understand and—"
“And the reader is not going to want to read further with it written this way,” he tilts his head. “You need to teach us about the world by having Rada interact with it.”
“He is though! He’s sharpening his axe and thinking about it!” you protest...

*a general plan for what I want to happen overall
*a specific idea for the first scene
*a wild disregard for How Good It Is

Oh right, writing progress. I've only got five chapters of my WIP to get through for my second draft. This is a HEFTY book, but that tends to be what I write anyway.

Honestly, we haven't gotten halfway through it, and November is kicking my ass. So happy I didn't commit to something like #Novelvember this year.
I'm sure I had some laps in sanity when I agreed to give three talks and go on two cruises this month... and that was before all the MS rejections.
