9 - Arlo Arlo was not about to let a trip interrupt his routine. He woke up before even the birds on the second day of the journey. They had picked up those making pilgrimage back to the Holy City of the Faithful from the Church in the First Ring and made it maybe a quarter of the way out of the stretches of fields, forests, and farmland that made up Ela's Outer City. Camp had been made in a crescent shaped field surrounded by a copse of trees by the side of the road. Everyone had pitched their tents and made a hearty dinner with ingredients still fresh from the Tower City. Arlo himself had gone to bed early, knowing that eventually they would have to set watches once they were outside the City's bounds, and that he should get his rest while he could. Which also let him wake before everyone else. He fetched water from the spigot in the center of camp, there for travelers, and shaved his face and head as he did every morning. Then he did a series of slow stretches inside his tent, having just enough room to spread his arms to either side of himself. After twenty minutes of this, he dressed in loose trousers and his boots, forewent his shirt, and stepped out into the cool morning air. The previous night he'd walked the entire outer perimeter of the campsite and determined that if you circled it twice you would have gone near enough to a mile. So now he started at a slow walk, into a jog, and finally a run, up to speed by the end of his first circuit. He maintained that run for the second circuit, then slowed to a brisk jog, letting his long legs devour the distance. Halfway through his third lap, he saw another figure out in the mist ahead of him and sped up. Reka was out running as well, in similar loose trousers, her new boots, but thankfully for her and everyone else's modesty, her training robe from sword lessons. Arlo felt a smile split his face as he caught up to and surpassed her. "On your left!" He shouted as he went by. Reka laughed but didn't bother to speed up. She had long legs for a woman her height and could put on speed when she needed to, but they both knew she had no hope of keeping up with him on a distance run. Arlo however did up his speed, catching her more quickly the second time with another, "On your left!" On the fifth lap the other men of Reka's honor guard had joined them. They were all grouped up in a slow moving knot and chatting amicably amongst themselves. Arlo checked over his shoulder and saw Reka wasn't too far behind him, so he sped up to the men's other side and turned around to start bounding backwards faster than the men were going forwards. "Did I pick a bunch of laze-a-bouts and idlers to protect our Princess?" he boomed, making sure to lean on to the word Princess enough that Reka would hear it. "I've got three laps on her and five you laggards. " "On your left!" Came Reka's call as she streaked by faster than should have been possible for someone of her build. Arlo laughed and turned back around to speed after her while the guardsmen all began cursing and finally putting their legs to proper work. He passed her again another hundred meters out and ran the rest of the way in silence. After the sixth lap, three miles or near enough, he veered off towards one of the wagons and picked up a few things before returning to a clearing just past where the last line of tents were pitched. He brought with him a bundle of staves all of uniform width and length and a bucket of water with a wooden ladle dropped in it. He put the bucket down a few feet away from the edge of camp and carried the staves about a quarter of the way across the field, dropping all but one. He sat with his retained staff across his legs and his eyes towards the road to watch the others go by and jeer at them to pick it up already. Reka finished her run soon after and drank a ladle full of water slowly while walking in a small circle. When she was done she put the ladle back in the bucket before walking over to the staves he'd thrown down and kicking one into her hands with her foot without breaking stride. As she approached, Arlo stood and they both began a series of practiced staff forms. They then treated their staves as long handled axes, and were halfway through spear forms before the other guardsmen started streaming into the clearing to slake their thirst and pick up a staff. There weren't enough to go around, so they only did sword forms in small groups of ten before passing their practice weapon to the next fellow in line. Arlo and Reka were both covered in a thick sheen of sweat by the time they got to their own sword forms, and Arlo's muscles had begun to tingle with the sweet pain of a proper workout. After they finished, they turned to one another and wordlessly began contact practice. To the guards already finished or waiting for their turns it might have looked impressive, but for the two of them it was essentially choreographed at this point. Arlo took the first "spar" and Reka the second, but neither were really trying to do much more than get in practice. By the time they were done though, a few of the faithful not doing morning chores had wandered over. The sun was just above the horizon at this point and Arlo could smell rashers of bacon and stacks of toasted bread being prepared back in camp. He looked around and started to feel a familiar beat begin past the sound of blood pumping in his ears. He suddenly felt less tired, felt less of the building soreness in his muscles. He had an audience. There was art to be made here. "Hey Reka," he said, turning to look at her, "what do you say we do a full spar? Powers on."
