i think that there is a distinction between pure statistical and (more broadly) computational approaches -- her pre-LLM work is in HPSG grammars, which are not at all as strict re: probabalistic approaches as Chomsky is, but which have a much closer affinity to, e.g., Gary Marcus.

the thing is that if you dig into mechanistic interpretability, statistical structures which self-organize the type of hierarchy which HPSG describes start to fall out, but the sort of Chomskyan part of the field has been feuding with statisticians so long they refuse to read any of that stuff.

so, HPSG does not see itself as an entirely descriptive project; it's essentially an attempt to harmonize that descriptive with plausible psycholinguistics. this entire branch of the field denies the possibility of statistical learning.

the formalist grammars which she has spent her life working on depend on the assumption that statistical learning of language is impossible. it is not impossible. therefore it is really hard to understand why anyone ought to take a HPSG theorist seriously about linguistics.
