Iconic SoHo bistro Raoul’s celebrates its 50th anniversary Monday—five decades as a boozy, bohemian hangout for actors, musicians, artists, gallerists, and assorted Manhattan cool kids. Vanity Fair spoke with Jay McInerney, Lauren Santo Domingo, Thomas Keller, and others about its dishy history.

A tacit challenge from respected gallerists prompts a personal reflection from me.

How? "Castelli and other gallerists of his time employed the elusive and rapidly changing value of their artists’ work to create tax benefits for purchasers willing to buy works of art and then donate them to charitable organizations like museums."

I worked in commercial galleries for 10 years, and where an artist got their degree(s)—or if they even had any—was the last thing any of us looked at on a CV. It’s a biographical curiosity, not a criterion for exhibitions or representation. Most (though not all) gallerists see it this way.

When Los Angeles gallerists Irving Blum and Walter Hopps offered a young Andy Warhol his first-ever solo painting show, they thought it would be a sensation.

They were wrong . . .
An L.A. Gallerist Bought Out Warhol’s First Painting Show for $1,000—and Ended Up with $15 Million
Ferus Gallery owners Irving Blum and Walter Hopps took a chance on a young Andy Warhol. The show was panned, but Blum ultimately made millions from it.

Very good article.

Are we destined to just follow the trad-art model?

it's a conundrum, and if anyone is gonna figure it out--it'll probably be an artist who can step outside of their own perspective and invite others to do the same. i used to think it was up to gallerists and curators but i think the gap is so big in modern world, that even they are struggling

Risk of Subjectivity: Critics are people too; their assessments depend on personal preferences, trends, or even connections with gallerists. Sometimes they exalt works to support the market or their own interests.
