#fetchallreplies
@Mastodon at least the first part of #fetchallreplies is included as well, right?

Alright, #fetchallreplies , backend edition is open as a PR against upstream masto: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/32615

Please roast me for my code and help me get it into a state where we can make this default behavior for masto instances and remove one of the biggest contributors […]

@[email protected] @[email protected] I hope the next one can be #fetchallreplies and reply controls after that since work on the implementation got picked up now and I'd consider that a big step forward.

I wonder if being cited as one of the major flaws of the current fediverse and the half dozen times i have been tagged under discussions about how it is one of the most important things that is wrong with the fediverse will get #fetchallreplies reviewed any faster?

idk it's been a month. there […]

Here's backfilling posts from profiles on the first time someone on your instance follows them, i'm trying to sneak up and close issue number 34 , which has been open since 2016. wish me luck: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/32634

So that's that,

* #fetchallreplies when expanding […]

when trying to find a popular fedi post to test #fetchallreplies on i really realize how deeply i am accustomed to this place.

goal: find a post that has a deep and broad reply tree. scrolling...

does FetchAllReplies not fix that? May not be enabled on every Mastodon instance yet of course.

I am once again declaring #fetchallreplies round 1 complete: when you open a post, the server will go and recursively fetch all replies to that post. Saving inserting those posts into the web ui as they are fetched for another PR, but this one works if you just refresh the page a time or two […]

I had thought that FetchAllReplies, that was merged into their main last week, would resolve most of those problems, but I’ve admittedly only skimmed the discussion around it.

Alright here's another quick patch: since #fetchallreplies is going and fetching updated info about posts, we might as well use all of it.

When you expand a post, in addition to fetching all its replies, with this PR you should also get an accurate boost and favorite count […]

i'll write more later but i just deployed #fetchallreplies and it's glorious

Is anyone else using #fetchallreplies on their server? Is there any way to get a loaded post to fetch all replies in the deck view without reloading the entire page?

Currently, I can load a post up in the last column, but unless I reload the whole page, the replies aren't displayed. (I believe […]

@rolle I think #fetchallreplies is appropriate here

Shout out to Claire* and Eugen for doing the frontend on this, I got pulled away to work on other things and so they pushed it over da finish line and added a whole new AsyncRefresh feature on top.

#fetchallreplies is for all the small […]

Oh gr8, apparently being able to await the results of a batch of sidekiq jobs is an exclusive "sidekiq pro" feature.

So here's the deal: for #fetchallreplies we need to set some kind of global fetch limit so a maliciously crafted thread tree doesn't keep us fetching forever. Currently it's […]

yes that was excellent work by @[email protected] and others from the team that worked with them to make FetchAllReplies get merged to address a longstanding issue.

I hear it should soon be on by default but that is not yet the case so probably ask your admin if you're not seeing all replies.
October 7, 2025 at 10:04 AM
@flancia.org you can read all replies on Mastodon soon too, thanks to #fetchallreplies being merged recently, I think this has implications for the reply count thing too.
March 22, 2025 at 1:53 PM
alright, after like a year of halfheartedly trying on and off, #fetchallreplies is pretty much finished - the problem of not being able to see all replies to a post is one of the largest complaints that people have with mastodon in particular but also the fedi in general. It is an especially […]

I think #fetchallreplies might just be another radicalizing moment for me in seeing how must of an influence a few hundred lines of code can have over the structure of a whole digital-technological system, we are a tiny instance of like a ~few hundred people on here per month and a ~few dozen […]

your own posts propagating depends on the same mechanics. Replies always go to the origin instance & anywhere that someone views the thread if instance has fetchallreplies enabled. Your own threads will end up on the instances where you've got followers or someone boosts you to theirs (+relayed).

in related news #fetchallreplies V1 is in its final form with the abuse scenario mitigated, split off in a separate worker so it might be more amenable to upstream, and like.. in general way cleaner than it was last time i said it was done.

I opted to split it it into two parts, this one just […]

Since we updated from upstream recently I have noticed that the fedi has seemed a lot quieter and sucked more and like less cool stuff is happening that other people are seeing and recognizing, and I just realized that was because the upstream version defaults #fetchallreplies to being off […]

@Setok I know one of your pet peeves about how the fediverse works is how posts don't propagate everywhere so did you hear there is now significant progress towards that? See #fetchallreplies
