They are gourds and when they dry out you can use them like sponges to clean dishes. They are also good skin exfoliators so people mix them in with soap.
I've never eaten any before, but another commenter said they taste similar to zucchini.

I acknowledge that chemical exfoliators work but, having grown up reading YM magazine, I still can't quite shake the idea I should be sloughing dead skin by rubbing crushed apricot pits all over my face

realized that I probably can't use any kind of exfoliating soap on my face without being burned. even the ones labeled as "gentle". Maybe it's just physical exfoliators. But I'm tired of having new patches that I have to nurse every time I use one.
