Synapse is a resource hog and kind of a bloated mess. Continuwuity/Conduwuit is easy to set up and just works. I've been running it for a while, though admittedly just for two users, but I've had no trouble with it. I also run my own signal bridge on it with no issues.

Matrix servers one year later -- there are now THREE Conduit/Conduwuit/Conuwuity forks, Go server Dendrite is in maintenance mode, and the old and busted Python codebase for Synapse is still rocking on.

I know Conduwuit has been discontinued, but I can't be bothered keeping Matrix up-to-date because I don't use it anymore anyway

I tested the ejabberd Matrix gateway and it, uh, needs some more work. In direct convos, XMPP -> Matrix works, but not Matrix -> XMPP. But I also use Conduwuit instead of Synapse.

I have not done so ever since rooms v12 got released and support was added into it
the problem is that continuwuity builds differently from conduwuit so it refuses to run on my RPi, so I'm forced to rebuild it manually […]

conduwuit now continuwuity isn't too bad for the servers, though the original dev was run out of the community apparently for being too practical, total mess.
I want FOSS, federated and E2EE so there aren't many options (XMPP is terrible too), but this does seem a fair assessment.

after many hours of downtime because i got distracted by a suspiciously systemd-shaped rabbithole, i have now migrated my conduwuit to continuwuity. my homeserver is running as normal. it was a drop-in replacement, just as advertised.
