Obviously serious students will be on another level but e.g. my mother, who studied Carnatic music quite seriously for twenty years or so, performed on AIR—I don’t think she knew what a thaat was until I defected to the other side

I feel fairly sure there are few Carnatic fans who can tell you much beyond the basics of Hindustani thaats

I feel like I’m an extreme Carnatic dilettante and I knew that. So I’d think most Carnatic listeners would—and that’s a decent number of people

The classical Carnatic song Sita Kalyanam Vaibhogame comes to mind, it’s played at so many weddings, but the wedding of Rama and Sita in Hindu mythology is not a happy union. Not a marriage to hope for.
At the risk of stating the obvious: people rarely read lyrics
Why do people on social media appear surprised that many punk bands are anti-fascist and anti-authoritarian; how is this surprising to you

I have the kind of face that looks like it should be singing classical Carnatic music and playing the veena in a sari, but this makes me start to head bang, hard, every single time

cheap seats and it was so lovely seeing all the people around me clapping out the thalam (beat), identifying the ragas (modes)etc. Carnatic classical is not listened to in decorous silence like the western variety. It's interactive, almost communal.

I saw one and then several videos of the Mandolin Sisters a few years ago. I was amazed at the music and disappointed that I couldn't buy a record. There is now a Mandolin Sisters record. I picked it up yesterday at Amoeba. It absolutely does not disappoint. discostan.bandcamp.com/album/odysse...

Charu Suri is a Grammy®-nominated pianist and composer who treads fearlessly between genres, blending several styles and fusing Indian ragas with more traditional jazz.

Here she shares her beautiful “Mohanam Hymn,” based on the Carnatic pentatonic raga Mohanam, but with a sweet jazz/gospel flavor.
