while this may seem unremarkable, particularly compared to the giant azhdarchids that dominated the late cretaceous skies, caelestiventus may well have been the largest pterosaur of the triassic period

there is a medially deflected flange on caelestiventus' mandible that may suggest the presence of a gular pouch, which has been observed in unrelated pterosaurs like rhamphorhynchus and pterodactylus, and could have been used for food storage and/or display

happy #fossilfriday! bonus: this is caelestiventus, a pterosaur from the late triassic. a close relative of the famous dimorphodon, caelestiventus was the first triassic pterosaur to be described from north america

Eudimorphodon, and Caelestiventus hanseni) on its back. Over 100 years ago, the first few fragmentary bones for this reptile were unearthed in the desert of New Mexico (Redonda Formation). Discovered by paleontologist E. D. Cope of the infamous "Bone Wars," he named
