#book-bans
Folks built a massive free access library in Roblox (I think? Maybe Minecraft?) to get around book bans.

Banning something just means people will find a different way to get it.

It's the same as book bans in public libraries over here. These idiots act like five year-olds are wandering into a library unaccompanied and somehow checking out smut books from the adult section, therefore it's the library's fault for HAVING the book instead of the completely absent parent.

crissa without getting into the merits of biden's healthcare nondiscrimination regulation when do you think biden issued his healthcare nondiscrimination regulation? open book, you can look it up and place it on the timeline with the bans. keep in mind that time moves like this:

i was reading this because as a tech reporter, i've been getting a lot of pitches suggesting all out surveillance of youth and / or bans on their free expression and freedom of association online. and welp. a lot of these cite haidt's book.
2024 book review in Nature: "Two things need to be said after reading The Anxious Generation. First, this book is going to sell a lot of copies, because Jonathan Haidt is telling a scary story about children’s development that many parents are primed to believe... www.nature.com/articles/d41...
The great rewiring: is social media really behind an epidemic of teenage mental illness?
The evidence is equivocal on whether screen time is to blame for rising levels of teen depression and anxiety — and rising hysteria could distract us from tackling the real causes.

Found it interesting that the book she mentioned in the discussion, Metamorphosis, was banned by the Nazi's

The parallels need a @velshibbc.bsky.social discussion

Please @velshi.com talk about what the bans mean, why the do it, the control

The fear because "their" kids get ideas too

I understand Utah school boards are using algorithms to “flag” sensitive words to justify their book bans.

After studying this history, students can consider how they will respond collectively to contemporary attacks on civil and human rights such as demands for censorship of Black history, ICE raids, racial profiling, book bans, denial of healthcare, defunding federal agencies & support, and much more.

Book Bans Still Happen Loudly in States with Anti-Book Ban Laws

If book banning is being crafted to circumvent Freedom to Read bills, it's beyond time to call this a public health crisis.

After Bondi’s performance, the book bans make sense. Kruschev said they’d take the US without firing a shot. Epstein created blackmail to control leaders of gov’t & business. The books bans weakened education. The NRA armed the US for a civil war. Fear stoked division. Wake up! Fight!

I save my hatred for book bans that don't backfire. Sometimes it calls attention to a work (The Satanic Diaries), but even then there's a better way to advertise a book. Usually, that's advertising, but to your point, the INTENT of a book ban has its roots in evil.

FURTHER: “degenerate art” was targeted for destruction. Some of these pieces, we only have black and white photos memorializing. Sometimes less.

I’m an author and a librarian to be. Book bans aren’t a badge of honor. They’re violence.

Reinforcing the category isn’t bold or helpful.
*pinches nose*

Time for your quarterly reminder that degenerate is a Nazi term, indicating the literal degeneration of a gene pool. Things this referred to: interracial marriage! Queerness! Disability!

It pretty much indicates they don’t think you’re human!

It’s not a cutesy way to say “leftist”

If you're talking about targeted book bans but you keep discussing every group being targeted *except* transgender works, I want you to know that that is a) really noticeable and b) really shitty
