Pollution is a critical threat to chalk streams. Enter the beavers.

After beaver engineering the environment, their slowing of water resulted in a dramatic decrease in levels of phosphates & nitrates improving water quality.

And so, ##BigRiverWatch comes to a close ...
Could beavers really rescue Norfolk’s threatened chalk streams?
Norfolk’s river Glaven is one of our rare chalk streams, and the site of an interesting experiment in environmental restoration.

Local people are working to get their river clean.

The Cow Tower Dippers, wild swimmers in Norwich, want part of the River Wensum to be a designated bathing water site. This would trigger regular pollution testing & keep the river safer for swimming.

Did you know the Little Ouse is one river which is being ‘re-wiggled’ by the Norfolk Rivers Trust, to reinstate wildlife habitats where humans had ironed them out.

And to learn more aboutthe art of wiggling rivers... 👇

They deserve rivers that aren’t toxic.

2,000 of you got out this weekend & surveyed a river with #BigRiverWatch 🙌

But can you make an honest social media team out of us? 👀

You've got until the end of Thurs 25th, to get your surveys in, put your river on the map, & bring us closer to our (slightly ambitious) claim.

The River Cam should flow with pure chalk spring water. Instead, it runs on sewage outflows laced with phosphorus, and it's killing life in the river. Read the full story for this week's #BigRiverWatch ⤵️

After noticing a lot of pollution on this stretch of the River Coquet in Northumberland back in late Spring (dead fish, frogs and white powder encrusted rocks); I decided to do the #BigRiverWatch and #WaterBlitz pollution testing here. It looked much improved, but we'll see when the results are in.

Thanks to work of concerned citizens, councillors, @theriverstrust.bsky.social, @wildlifebcn.org & other nature trusts some river habitats are being recolonised by Ratty, the endangered water vole...

Help wildlife thrive & report the state of stream or river near you for #BigRiverWatch.
Today, after much predation by American mink introduced in the 1950s, water voles are one of the UK’s most endangered species.

Pollution, climate change and the loss of their natural habitats from intensification of agriculture has not helped.
Endangered – the remarkable water vole is making a comeback

Good news for Norfolk’s rivers!

The Riverlands project will restore 13km of the River Bure, improve water quality, and bring back wildlife from water voles (see 🧵) to dragonflies.

The Cam should flow with pure chalk spring water.

Instead, it runs with what we flush down the sink, and that’s killing life in the river.

Villagers are ripping invasive plants from the banks.

Trout habitats are being restored.

Wildlife is being tracked.

But one thing still poisons the Cam: sewage pouring from treatment works.

Five years ago, they warned the River Cam was only ‘one or two dry summers from crisis.’

That crisis has arrived – sewage, pollution, abstraction, and a dying chalk stream.

See why it matters.

Councillor Richard Pavitt has spent five years warning of crisis.
