The NYU #spacetalks are always worth your while.

This season you can get a glimpse of of my work in North American #Astroculture, the tech broligarchy‘s fantasies of #multiplanetarity, & how Richard Powers‘ “Bewilderment“ may point toward a ‘terralectic‘ conception our relation to space. Tune in!
A roundtable in honor of Martin Collins, cosmic imaginaries in China, adaptation strategies in post-Soviet Russia and multiplanetarity in contemporary US astroculture – the NYU Space Talks lecture series goes into its tenth season.

I am teaching a class on “North American Astroculture“ this term, and there we discuss that the US context, with is foundational myth of an expansionist telos of human civilization spearheaded by the US, is particularly fertile ground for the tech bros‘ technoliberal fantasies of tech-tree progress.
«Something like Civilization is a lot of what's going on here as well—the idea of a tech tree that's predefined by the game, and you just choose how quickly you're going to advance along that tree. That's just not how anything in human history has ever worked. It's a dangerous belief.»
No, we are not going to live on other planets. Bullshit artists like Musk might as well be the leaders of death cults. arstechnica.com/culture/2025...

a fascinating thread on the persian origin of the word "Behenian" (which we see all the time in astroculture)

👀
In his Occulta De Philosophia, the 16th century German occultist, Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, outlines a list of fifteen fixed stars to which he refers as the (pl.) "Behenii" or (sing.) "Behenius" stars.
