We go to academy together.” “Danbi?” she repeats. “I like that name.” “Thanks,” I say. “I like yours too.” “It means ‘doe.’ What does ‘Danbi’ mean?” “Sweet rain.” Ayala pats Hart’s arm, and he lowers her to the floor. She grabs my hand and begins steering me through the house. Framed photographs and artwork brighten each wall. Every corner harbors some intimate item—a basket of weathered walking sticks, a pair of rainboots with faces drawn on the toes. It’s the kind of house that feels alive, every nook and cranny reverberating with an excess of love and memory. What would it be like to grow up in a home like this? “Papa!” Ayala calls as she tows me up with her to the kitchen counter. A tower of a man in a frilly lavender apron stands behind it, chopping onions. His knife-wielding arm features a figure-eight-shaped tattoo. The knife nimbly taps along the butcher block as he glances up. “This is Sweet Rain,” Ayala says. “She came with Hart and has pretty hair.” She scrambles up into a chair and nibbles on a ginger snap.

From my Epic Fantasy novel Demon’s Bargain. I may have shared this one before, but I like this introspection as he realizes he’s fallen hard for Kahyla.
The next turn in the switchback brought her profile into view, sitting proud and strong in the saddle. Why not just admit it? You love her. His hands twitched. I love her, but there’s no future for us together. She won’t leave Tamrin and there’s no place there for an outsider like me. Why hurt her with my neediness? The sword scars on his hands stood out white. If he hadn’t followed his father’s bad advice, he’d have ink stains from poetry. According to Kahyla, what he chose to do with these hands made him who he was. His Da would be laughing out his ass at him–all distracted over a girl, and an educated girl at that. Screw Da, he’s wrong. Despard nudged his horse. “How much further, Kahyla?”

At Simon's, he had gotten most of the graffiti off his front door. Whatever cleaner he had used left a lighter spot than the rest of it, the corrosive acting like some kind of bad tattoo removal. After a polite hello I asked him if I could still get breakfast. #WIPSnips #amquerying #skywrite
